epcj:

Thanks for the awesome answers everyone!

How do I go about finding a HDMI 2.1 4K TV? Can't seem to find a good place that states it in the specs. Are they quite rare at the moment? Don't wanna be spending too much on the new setup haha

The last couple of pages of this thread is a good place to start, but generally you are looking for TVs with full HDMI 2.1 support.

In the OLEDs, the LG BX/CX etc are the only ones so far. In LCD, the Samsung Q70T and upwards, and the Sony X900H are the most notable. The LG Nano85 and upwards also support it, but as they use IPS screens, I wouldn't rate them for gaming.

I would be waiting until closer to launch though, as prices are still at the peak of their cycle, and generally Black Friday sales are when they start dropping. This year may vary though with everything going on.

Disclaimer I sell amplifiers but be aware if you’re trying to pass hdmi through another device before the tv it will have to support hdmi 2.1 specs to carry though e.g vrr if your plugged in that way.
Otherwise check if the tv has multiple hdmi 2.1 ports.

That's actually a great point! I had endless issues trying to get ps4 pro working with HDR - and think it's all because of the receiver.

Can you recommend any receivers that might fit the bill for the upcoming standards?
Cheers

again just to be clear I sell them but a different thread here we discuss upcoming yamaha av receivers. Marantz and Yamaha have some. Any devices hdmi splitters/soundbars need to be hdmi 2.1 and full spec (if passing through hdmi)  Obviously no optical output on the ps5 so a splitter/adapter would be required if you only have an optical input which obviously will have drawbacks.

Also be aware some devices are releasing firmware updates in the future (I believe Sony TV is) to support certain hdmi 2.1 specs.

Question:  am I correct that just because it says it supports hdmi 2.1 doesn't necessarily mean it supports it to full bandwidth is that correct? e.g. 4K@60hz 1440p@120hz and not supporting 4k@120hz?

Best bet wait till the two are available and test. I've preordered a couple of yamaha AV receivers and a ps5 so will "test" thoroughly.

Would be awesome to see your test results and outcome!

HDMI 2.1 is a spaghetti of acronyms, which an OEM can support any number of and call it HDMI 2.1 compliant. eARC, QMSALLM, QFT/HFR, VRR...

eARC is the most popular one, with a few also supporting Quick Media Switching Auto Low Latency Mode.

Quick frame transport/high frame rate and variable refresh rate are the two big ones for gaming though. The full bandwidth of the spec is not entirely necessary though, as LG has done by only putting 40gbps ports on their TVs this year.

Edit: QMS is now ALLM

Another question: I haven't heard about native 1440p support for ps5 (I'm aware the xbone sx will)

the monitor I bought recently supports 1080p@240hz freesync but at 27" I would recommend a higher resolution as I find myself going back to my samsung 4k (an early model 50JU6400 which might do 4k@60hz

It's not as smooth but its better for "wheres wally" searching in Apex Legends.

In terms of HDR with ps4 don't forget some Tv's only support HDR on specific HDMI inputs and some require enabling UHD to on for that hdmi input. I know my samsung only has it on HDMI1 and I had enable UHD on in settings for that input. HDMI cord can be a factor too.  Sounds like you might have sorted it but FYI for others.

Thank you. Next tv I purchase will surely have 4k@120hz support. It is nice to see gaming a priority on TV's in the future where I remember the debacle with HDReady tv's not being 1080p.

@ShinyChrome “In the OLEDs, the LG BX/CX etc are the only ones so far.” [... supporting HDMI 2.1].

My PS4 Pro runs straight into an LG C9 and I will be using that with the PS5. I was not sure if the C9 supports HDMI 2.1 - just checked, and it does. I believe that 2.1 runs on all four HDMI sockets.

We also have a C8. That does not run HDMI 2.1 - just 2.0.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Sorry, should have clarified that with "so far this year", and also includes LGs full OLED lineup, I couldn't be bothered listing the full alphabet.

The C9 is advertised as supporting HDMI 2.1, although funnily enough like every other TV that claimed support, until the Nvidia Ampere cards launched recently there was no HDMI 2.1 sources to verify this.

It may have been discussed before, but you don't necessarily need it, as most games will probably target 4k60fps with more emphasis on eye candy, but if you buying a PS5 and you are due a TV upgrade anyway, it would be silly not to try to get one with HDMI 2.1.

Technically, HDMI 2.0b can support 4k120fps SDR with chroma subsampling, but most TV OEMs haven't bothered to implement it.

It looks like the Sony X9000H (will have) full support. Right now it does 4k120 and a future update will bring VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode).

Pricing is a bit sharp over here compared to Australia, so probably worth waiting for a special.

Did anyone get a pre-order online through JB? Is it just a deposit or payment in full?

I have a $200 JB voucher I want to use for pre-ordering an Xbox tomorrow, but can't seem to find any info on how payment works and they haven't announced anything Xbox specific yet.

If you're doing it online, no payment required (but a credit card will need to be entered).

In store, you could use your gift card.
