Regarding the Recruit-A-Friend, you can both level on an Oceanic server as you get 300% exp on kills/quests/dungeons, the bonus lasts until you hit level 81, its extremely fast to level anything. I'm on Frostmourne(ally), Thaurissan(both) and Aman'Thul (ally). Been playing since release, played every class at max level and can offer help ingame or If you just need info on stuff

Sounds like it's too late but my advice would be:

Don't waste your time/life on an mmo. They are designed as a time sink with casino slot machine like addictivity that leverage's the principle of intermittent variable reward in order to keep you playing/paying.

You will become over invested in your character(s), mark my words.

Play games with great stories that have a beginning, middle and most importantly an end.

Plenty of amazing games to play instead eg: Mass Effect series, Borderlands, Fallout series, Bioshock series, Assasins Creed series etc etc etc

I play MMO's and manage to fit in plenty of single player games, waiting for Dark Souls prepare to die edition to arrive from Mightyape. I play online shooters as well BF3, AA3 and might get this new Counter Strike that's coming out.

Im no longer addicted to WoW like i was couple of years back where it really was the only game we played every night. Now i load it up maybe once a week sometimes longer. I'm guildless so no pressure to level up for the guild or be on every night to help with raiding/pvp etc., Hardly dungeon crawl, i prefer pvp and battlegrounds have stuck with the main two characters i started with in 2007.

Dropped Starwars mmo - game ended up getting boring and the pvp lagg was terrible dont know if they have fixed it by now. Still on the pc but haven't bothered to go back, i hear its free to play now.
Two other mmos i play is Startrek online & Aion and now back to wow for the expansion so will lvl to 90, get the pvp gear then slow down back to once a week.

having read my above post. I think it would be fair to say im not addicted to mmos im just addicted to games all up. Haha

I wonder how Asrafrate is doing in WoW? :) Is Asrafrate leveling up or did she try it for a few hours and thought buggar this, you WoW players are mad hatters!

Asrafrate started with a Blood Elf Warlock, got her to level 24 and decided to switch and start afresh with a Blood Elf Mage. Said Mage is 3.5 bars away from level 46 and she's been through a few dungeons and loving LOVING looting :D

Things Asra is enjoying:
Looting (and selling said loot to make gold.. NEEDZ MORE GOLD!)
Quests
Levelling
Getting mounts and pets
Fun storylines and some interesting characters
Watching my friend go EVIL in dungeons. Strathmore - Main Gate when she rounds up all those big as behemoths then just squishing them... oh my *fans self* Wishing to god we can get that rare mount drop though!

Things Asra is not enjoying:
Horrible computer that only just allows her to play WoW
Pathetic mage... once I get her to 85 I'm going to start a druid
Not knowing how to AoE yet (hoping to fix that this weekend)
NOT ENOUGH COOL LOOT I CAN WEAR ON MY PATHETIC MAGE! (ahem)
Missing out on rares, mounts and pets from the last x number of years I was daft enough to not be playing
Friends who weren't daft showing off their elite accounts :P
How addicted I am to this game now :(

Really enjoying it, but I really REALLY need to get a new computer. Right now I can literally only have WoW running. Loading anything else causes my computer to come to a crashing halt. Literally.

p.s. would be keen to connect up with you guys on WoW!

What system do you have at the moment ?

My P4 with a 7600GT was running Wow OK at start of the year, but that was only at 1280x1024....

Honestly? I can't remember. I put it together almost 5 years ago :(
Not enough storage, hanging on start up every time I start up, yadda yadda. Now I can't even listen to music while on WoW, so yeah, definitely time for a new computer!

you could put up a decent gig for wow (or similar games) with a fraction of that cost.

on the other hand - i tried to post this when i first saw your post.

i think my best advise is, don't play - unless, i suppose, you have nothing else to do, mortgage free, children grown up, travelled around the world, and having supported 12 hungry children.

now this is coming from a field marshall, so i'm not just making it up out of thin air.

looking back, i could have spent the time much better. in the end, yes we had great fun, some ups n downs. but there are huge opportunity costs (which is, funny enough, often quoted in wow economy talks). we could have moved overseas, for better jobs and higher pays, we could have two more children, we could have worked in a startup and made a small fortune, we could have completed our huge to do list and travelled around the world.

when i logged back in last night with free time before expansion, i found myself not missing it much (and didn't miss much content). some old friends still playing but we have other ways to keep in touch.

there are just endless gear grinding, rep grinding, honor grinding, and chit chats. theory crafting is fun, but it's not limited to wow gears and talents, basically i could theory craft on anything, house budget, travel schedules, or my baby's grow chart...

i guess, if you want some fun with friends, go ahead, but don't spend too much money on a new pc, never spend money to buy virtual currency or items, and if you find yourself addicted to it, you should think if the time could be better spent elsewhere.

Pretty much.

WoW started out as a fun mmo rpg but it progressed into using psychological tricks (operant conditioning, reinforcements schedules, skinner box etc) that exploit weaknesses in human evolutionary behaviour to farm you for a subscription fee.

Achievements and daily quests epitomize this.

Check yourself and if you ever find yourself skipping real life events because you want to make a raid or hand in some seasonal quest etc realise what you are doing.

If you can spare an hour or so away from WoW Jonathan Blow gives a great lecture on the human condition and gaming (note: it starts pretty slowly and is quite long)

Hi guys, appreciate the concern etc etc but I know the difference between real life and game life :)

I will never let a game take over my life or my priorities. I enjoy WoW BECAUSE it's simple and has all these things I can get at my own pace. There is nothing there that makes me want to spend hours at a time on it :)

The build of my new PC isn't just for WoW. I'm using it for work and for watching movies and listening to music. I also work on the principle of if I get a grunty machine now, it'll last me for ages. This theory has held true so far :)

I enjoy the game. End of story. I'm more keen to hear from people who play, enjoy it too and want to connect. Thanks.

Good to hear you're enjoying it. I gave up WoW about a year ago after 3+ years of fairly hardcore playing. I still think WoW is a great game, of course it can be addictive like anything. Don't let the naysayers put you off it. Not everyone is undisciplined and has an inability to play in moderation.

I played for two years on US Cenarius as a Human Warrior before transferring with the guild to Saurfang.

My best advice is finding a guild that has mature players in, on higher population servers there are often quite a few advertised as family friendly or for parents or similar. Alternatively you could try starting your own guild if you have a few friends you enjoy playing with. That way you get to recruit the kind of people you want to play with.

Being a guild master can be a real challenge depending on playstyle but it also rewarding. I started playing WoW with a few people from Geekzone and later on ended up running a large 25 man raiding guild and took us a high world ranking. I met a lot of great people in that guild and a decent number of us are still together now raiding in SWTOR.

Anyway the point to my rambling post is that WoW is an excellent game if you have the ability to moderate your playing time and you can have a lot of fun and meet some great people.

I don't really regret giving it up as I've found a newer and better game to play (SWTOR!!!!) but that's a story for a different thread.

WoW doesn't start until you have finished leveling then the game opens up and there is so much to do (or for most 'needs' to be done) that you either play the game for hours at a time or you login every now and then always playing catch up. You have to keep at it, to keep up.

There is an ending for me, my professions all up to date, the gear i wanted then I can relax and wait till the next season starts or the next expansion then do it all over again.

Like im doing now, lvling from 85 to 90, already got mining up, will need to get engineering up that can take awhile. In between leveling i am mining ores, the Ghost ore mines are going for 270-300 gold a stack on my realm atm and im selling 7 to 9 stacks a night. Making a bit of gold while the new ore is sought after. Then once that dies down if i have manage to lvl to 90 in between i will then grind for new pve gear dungeon crawl and pvp gear, Battlegrounds. WoW is a job.
