I've resisted getting into WoW for ages, but when a close friend said she was on it, I knew it was finally time to give in.

Any tips long time players can give me? Good websites to read up on etc? Where are most NZ players based?

I'm currently doing research on the characters and races, trying to figure out which will suit me.

One tip the Hunter is the easiest class to level up, you have a pet to help you lvl that can be like a mini tank against mobs. Hunter specs are Beast mastery good for leveling turning your pet into a fighting force to be reckoned with! Marksmanship is good for pvp Survival pvp/pve. I like survival the best you can last longer in a pvp fight. But anyway its very easy now to lvl up with any class than it use to be, i remember when i first started it took me months to get to 70 and i played as a hunter but i was pretty much a noob not really knowing what i was doing. First time in a dungeon i got kicked for pulling mobs and wiping the group 2x. lol

I also think in the expansion the hunter will be able to spawn call his pets at once to fight for one minute. I think its 3 pets the limit. Thats gonna be fun if allowed in pvp games.

Also if you get your friend to recruit a friend option you get double the XP which is going to make leveling even faster.

Kiwis are mainly on oceanic servers

WoWPedia is a treasure trove of info, particularly on quest walk-thrus and lore.  Curse.com also has some useful addons to download for free.

The Oceanic servers, such as Khaz'goroth and Caelestrasz, are among the more popular for NZ/AUS-based players.

Thanks guys; waiting for the starter pack to install and then I'll be downloading the expansion. US$20 for all three was a deal I couldn't pass on!

To be honest Druid and Shaman sound really appealling. Probably not the best choice for a newbie though... hrrmmm.

The best way to enjoy WoW is to find a guild with mature people who have both a sense of humor, and enthusiasm for an aspect of the game (PVP or Raiding).

MMOs loose their lustre pretty quick in face of all "the kids" on them. Find a good guild and enjoy yourselves

Dolts probably :D
But then I imagine half the "girls" on any online game are guys playing female chicks. ;)

CruciasNZ finding the guild will be interesting because I'm a rather introverted person by nature. But will give it a go.

agree with CruciasNZ. Or once you see guild members in chat telling mom jokes or i laid your mom last night, time to find another guild quick.

Druid is a good choice.

Hrrmm can we move realms at a later date?

My friend is hoarde on an American server, and for me to play with her via refer a friend I'd have to do it off that server since she's not hoarde anywhere else. If I want to then move to Oceania later, is it possible?

Yes, but to transferr to another realm it will cost $25 USD.  Or a Faction change $30 USD

Sounds like it's too late but my advice would be:

Don't waste your time/life on an mmo. They are designed as a time sink with casino slot machine like addictivity that leverage's the principle of intermittent variable reward in order to keep you playing/paying.

You will become over invested in your character(s), mark my words.

Play games with great stories that have a beginning, middle and most importantly an end.

Plenty of amazing games to play instead eg: Mass Effect series, Borderlands, Fallout series, Bioshock series, Assasins Creed series etc etc etc

Rag or this is part of the reason why I usually avoid games. Heck I remember the Evercrack days when idiots were installing it on network servers, but I'm not too worried I'll get addicted. I have certain priorities and interests in my life, and nothing online will ever take me away from those :)

Ah the EQ days at iHUG, they rocked ;)

My first character in WoW was a Draenai (sp) Paladin... was running round with him for quite some time not knowing about half the things he could do until a friend asked why i wasnt doing certain things... I wasnt dying either tho... :)

Had lot of fun in WoW, but family and work came along so dropped it... I did join again a few months back and did the whole "free to play" until lvl 20, but the game was deserted, areas that use to be packed full of people were empty - everyone was lvl 60+ and in areas I couldnt go.

Ive started playing SWTOR (have some time now kids are bit older) , seems ok so far but dont know anyone else playing.
