Also PS Plus ($90 with hardly ever any discounts) gives one game for PS4 and a couple of other games for PS3 and PS Vita. If you don't have those other consoles then not nearly as much value. The main thing is get what his mates have as the multiplayer gaming together with friends is really the best feature of the modern consoles.

Also I think it is possible to have child accounts that need parent account to authorise various things (purchases) and can be upgraded to full accounts once they are old enough. Not sure if you need two Xbox Live subscriptions etc.

Ps Plus has 2 games per month for PS4, 2 games per month for PS 3 and 2 games per month for PS Vita. Some games are cross buy so you can also play them on the PS 4 ( this month technically has 4 games for the PS 4)

michaelmurfy: I would personally recommend going towards a PS4 - the paid subscription gives you a bunch of games every month and the controller etc is all rechargeable meaning there is not as much of an up-front cost for him. Also quite a few packs out there with bundled games (get Destiny, well worth it). You can also set parental controls if needed.

I'm pretty sure live gives games as well.

So if I understand correctly, to really get the fundamentals going we need to purchase

1 x game package deal (whatever is best at the time) circa $650
1 x play and charge kit circa $40
1 x extra controller with play and charge kit circa $110
1 x 12 month membership circa $60

I am guessing they need a special plug headset as well...so another $60 odd bucks? Or will any standard gaming aux or USB headset work?

Boy this is starting to add up!!!

Someone said the PS4 comes with all this stuff as standard?

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

The important thing the creation of PSN account, if you want to abide the T&Cs then being 13 years old does take a bit of consideration and planning as "junior" sub-account cannot be "promoted" to full account.

The PSN age restrictions are bizarre and unworkable. The nice thing however (at least for Destiny) get full PS Plus benefits. I had to scrap the right age sub-accounts and create adult ones as the kids could basically play nothing.

The Xbox Live and Window Family Safety settings work very well. With the one exception that there are weird restrictions on what children can buy. Basically Microsoft don't want things happening like kids dressing their avatars as sluts so they lock down the whole store. It might normalise at 13, but I'd be tempted to just add a few years to the age.

The PS4 head set is designed for an even weirder ear than your average apple ear buds. They're rubbish. They're also pointless, and headset with a 3.5mm jack will work plugged into the controller, and the PS4 seems to support any USB headset.

I bought my son a Turtle Beach Ear Force P12 Gaming Headset and an Xbox One Headset Adapter. This gave him a working headset for pretty much every device except for an Xbox 360. Microsoft basically sucks when it comes to headsets for consoles.

I wouldn't worry bother with the play and charge kits, just get normal rechargable batteries. The Microsoft and add-on rechargables never seem to last, and you're paying a premium for them.

If you are after assassins creed, the jb hifi bundle gives you a couple of AC titles to download, the xbox and the Kinect camera for $679. the ps4 bundle is $10 cheaper with different two games on disc and it doesn't have the Kinect camera.

If you are not in a super hurry, then holiday weekends usually result in sales... maybe Waitangi Day might be worth watching (I have no inside info here, just a guess)

A hard out gamer on Xbox, downloading free games from Xbox live etc, watching streaming video (YouTube, quickflix, etc) could burn through 100gb in a month easy. probably good to get on a high GB or unlimited plan..

If you are not in a hurry to buy, keep an eye on the warehouse red deals and their WOW page, they have sold some very good xbox one bundles, around the $500 and $550 mark, on Christmas day ( yes im sad i looked), they had it as low as 495. They also have very good deals on all accessories every so often, you just have to time it when to buy.

Also keep and eye on noel leeming, they had new controllers a few weeks ago for as low as $45.00, and some good deal on headsets.

Oh and NZGameshop.com is good for getting games cheap, as long as you are happy waiting a week for delivery, ive used them lots, and so have my freinds without issues, ( only postage delays sometimes)

Thanks all for the suggestions and guidance. He is emphatic that the Xbox is the console he wants, so will work around the accessories he may need. Will try and hold his back until Waitangi day sales (fingers crossed)

I would skip the version with the bundled Kinect camera (aside from in the likely event there are any Kinect-based games he is desperate to play!) and buy the cheaper version without it - save the difference or spend it on another game or some accessories.

This Assassin's Creed pack sans Kinect, but with 2 games is $569 from Mighty Ape.
