That's the same with the Xbox controller though isn't it? Maybe it's different now but certainly when I was trying to get Xbox streaming working on my Surface Book last year I had to get the wireless dongle. I also had a hell of a time getting Xbox streaming working outside the house. Had to tinker with dozens of ports and NAT rules. At least the PS4 Remote Play feature works seamlessly, anywhere you have an internet connection. I think Microsoft's only really supporting game streaming to other devices within your own house. That said, I did get it working remotely :)

I really don't mind using the USB connected controller for PS4 remote play. I'm generally only using it on my laptop with a short cable anyway.

I don't have the patience for most games anymore. I played "A Way Out" recently and really enjoyed it.

Kudos to MS for their backward compatibility allowing me to play Crackdown 1 in 4K HDR, and Also for a promotion that allowed me $2 for 2 months of game pass that includes Forza Horizon 4 on release day.

No experience with Xbox sorry. It's annoying because they all come with bluetooth now and play like normal controllers when paired but can't be used with the official app. Also of note, I think only the Dualshock 4 v2 controllers that have usb connectivity will work this way (new controllers that came with ps4 slim/pro, or off the shelf 2017 and newer).

PS4 remote play is awesome in that regard, Sony servers do all the hand-over when connecting so no NAT or port shenanigans. I only ever needed to use my TAP openvpn server for remote play when I couldn't be bothered waiting for the connection to fail after 60 seconds cause the ps4 was too slow to boot from sleep mode :(

I guess controllers can only be paired to one device at a time. I'd rather use USB than have to repair my controller every time I go back to my console on the TV.

As an avid gamer for all my life I must admit I’ve lost interest in gaming in general for probably the last 8 months.

Games I have traditionally enjoyed have been the GTA, Fallout, Battlefield series and sport titles like Madden, NBA 2K, *Skate, and *Fight Night (*once upon a time)

Never got the bug for playing Fortnite so when all my mates migrated to FN that’s probably when I lost interest as all the BF1 servers just died and I had no one to play online with.

Mainly game on console (PS4 Pro) but have a now overspecced home PC that was built for gaming but daughter likes to use it for school so occasionally will only boot up something like Civ 6.

Last games I would of played would have been GTA V, FO4 and BF1 but since then the PS just collects dust.

Miss playing xbox so I’m considering a One X but need to muster up the motivation to play again.

I blame Fortnite for that.

I'm in a similar boat, I used to play a lot of RPG's but have recently not finished Pillars of Eternity II & Divinity 2 as I just don't find them engaging - I think it's the open world-ness of them that just gets overwhelming due my limited play time.

In the last couple weeks I picked up Mordheim City of the Dammed in a 80% off sale and that's been pretty good, I just wish it had XCOM level modding and customization. Darn GW ...

I also loved going through RPG's of most genres. Cyberpunk 2077 is probably my next biggest one. Only problem is as said, time constraints. Not enough to fully enjoy the game.

On another note I've had to pick up Destiny 2 and am liking the combat and PvE/PvP aspect but am disappointed in the RNG baked into the gear/items. The uncertainty of intentionally random systems put me off from ever putting too much effort into them. Probably why I stopped mmo's.

Yeah, I have enjoyed what little I have played of Destiny 2 as well. The combat and controls remind me of the PS3 resistance game. I find FPS quite hard to play on Consoles, but I have managed to do ok.

I feel like I only have time for one good RPG a year these days. Last year it was Assassin's Creed Origins. Spent about 2-3 months playing that. Then the rest of the year was broken up into smaller narrative games. I'm facing a real dilemma now that RDR2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey are either coming soon or out now respectively. I want to play both, I don't know how that will fly on the home front :)

As experienced gamers, what titles would you recommend to someone trying out gaming for the first time? And I mean for a pretty much total newbie who's not particularly coordinated! I'm looking for games that will hone the basic skills needed before moving onto more advanced titles.

My boys will finally have saved their half of the money for a PS4 this month, and we've already bought a bunch of games in advance. I've bought A Way Out, Unchartered 4, Heavy Rain, and The Last of Us; the kids have Fifa, No Man's Sky, Little Big Planet 3, Battlefront 1&2, Skylanders Imaginators, and Skylanders Superchargers. Would any of these (including the kids' ones) act as a good primer?

Thanks for any advice.

@jonathan18 Uncharted 4 is probably a good starting position. The Adventurer difficulty level is very forgiving, with auto-aiming etc, and the traversal mechanisms are pretty easy to learn. Aside from that it's an excellent narrative with outstanding graphics.

Heavy Rain is cool but it's a tricky control scheme, feels a bit unnatural IMO. The Last of Us is EXCELLENT but you might want to build up to that. Play it after Uncharted.

Agreed, Unchartered. Not sure on the age of your kids, but be aware it does involve shooting to kill and some adult conversations/swearing IIRC.

Honestly, if I was buying a game that really made the PS4 shine and was loads of fun, Spiderman would be my first port of call.

Initially if you are new to gaming it might be a little unfamiliar in terms of controls, but you'll get the hang of it.

The first few hours of most games is training wheels these days anyway. It can be frustrating if you're a seasoned gamer but it's useful sometimes even just to get comfortable with the different control schemes that each game seems to employ. Why there isn't a standard scheme across game types is beyond me. Bioshock perfected the control scheme in my opinion, but every other game developer seems to want to be unique in that regard.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

My kids are 7 and nearly 11; the more 'adult-suitable' titles I mentioned I'd bought are going to be for me only (well, other than A Way Out - I've specifically bought that title as it's two-player, as I'm going to try to get my wife interested! I have also bought her Just Dance), while the others we've bought for the boys and are the only ones they'll be allowed to play.

Ok, Uncharted will be my first title to try, though I'm also happy to buy other titles if they'd provide a better intro to gaming. My oldest kid is really keen on Spiderman, so this may well be a title to look at getting sooner rather than later.

Any other titles that would be worth purchasing? I'm thinking I'll join the kids with playing some of their titles, as I'll probably learn more from watching them!
