For your user case I’d suggest going s/h could be a good option, especially if you can find one like we did from a fellow GZ member, which was in perfect condition. Keeps the price down so less justification not to go for it! Also one less new device that needs to be made…

Like others, I’ve already made the argument above for going for the OLED over the original version - noting you’ll be using it sometimes handheld I’d definitely recommend the former, as the LCD is really dull (both in brightness and colours) in comparison.

I’m not a gamer so rely on my kids’ feedback - while they have access to a huge number of games on various platforms, their all-time favourites remain the two Switch Zeldas and (in one kid’s case) Animal Crossing; they’d argue the Switch is worth it just for Zelda!

OK, so you've all failed miserably at the job of convincing me not to get one.

I'm happy to go 2nd hand, especially so late in the product's life cycle. What is a resonable price for 2nd hand OLED model? I see some on marketplace for anywhere from $400 (bare system) to $550 with a few accessories and games. I'd prefer a bare system as I'm mostly digital these days so don't want to carry cartridges and would rather choose my own accessories.

We paid $400 incl shipping for a mint OLED model and a Nintendo Pro controller in Jul last year, which was an excellent deal at the time and probably remains so today. (I get that you want to choose your own accessories, but this is the controller my son would have chosen anyway, and if the deal is good…)

But personally I’d be happy to pay more than the cheapest offers out there if it comes with some assurance the product has been well looked after (such as we got, purchasing via someone here on GZ). Surely worth asking in the FS/WTB forum?

We got bitten with the first Switch we bought for the boys, where the seller wasn’t up-front about the condition of the controllers, one of which slid out too easily and the other required new parts within a year or so. (The joycons seem to be prone to problems, but at least it’s easy to get replacement parts and or buy replacement controllers.)

Go the OLED as I think from memory it had a bigger SSD and games are becoming more and more downloadable as opposed to physical card.

weve had ours for nearly one year, we got the Mario red special edition!

recently got a second set of controllers.

  • some games allow split controllers to allow two players with one set and some don’t.
  • we got a second set because it’s easier to use sports and dance etc with a split controller each and the games allow this.

it does the trick for now, we only play Mario (the side scrolling one that was launched last year), dance, sing, sports and just now starting to get into driving games.  Kids want Harry Potter but I think at some stage I’ll get them animal crossing, Zelda and probally Mario kart when I see a bundle deal.

its best to buy a subscription nintento online….it gives some games extra features

We brought all our accessories from Amazon (golf clubs, tennis rackets, swords, boxing/bowling grips, dance wristbands bands, soccer leg bands, steering wheels etc etc)

+1 for the oled.

I’m after an older unpatched one, because I want to mess around with Android streaming, otherwise if you wanted to mod it later that is an option regardless off the model.

We had a WiiU for the kids, but started losing track of how long they were spending as they could take off with the controller with the tv off and play. So I’m not massively interested in the Handheld mode at all, except for the fact I have an upcoming surgery and intend to (attempt to) game stream from it for a few days.

Oled screen, aside from looking better is also larger. Plus it has twice as much internal storage, better speakers and I think it has an Ethernet port on the dock.

Pleased to say that I've held off and still haven't pulled the trigger yet. Unless I see a ridiculously good deal on a OLED model I'm going to wait for the Switch 2. For now at least, Astrobot has satiated my desires for fun platforming.
