Buying a Nintendo Switch mainly for use docked with TV. A few questions.

For two player with the standard console are those snap off controller things used by two people at the same time or will I need to purchase an additional controller?

Is there an easy way to spot the difference between gen1 and gen2?

Anything else I might need to know. Cheers.

Get the OLED model or wait for the increasingly rumoured next version to drop.

Buy an additional controller well worth it, even the ones from Temu are not bad as the can be calibrated with the switch , the newer models serial starts with XK.

Why bother with OLED if using it docked?

Yes two people can use the side controllers, but you need small hands. It's much nicer to play with 2 sets of controllers and the joy-con grips.

They can be but they aren't very comfortable, they are fine when both of them are in the 'joy-con grip' (included) but individually they are a pain. Better to get 1x additional controller.

Because, despite what op says, I'd be surprised if it is only used docked. More than a few people I've known who said they would mainly use their switch on the TV ended up more often using it handheld. Good to have the option for a better experience either way.

Is the non-oled so much worse?

No, it's not worse. It's just not as good.

My son replaced his original with the OLED (as both were s/h, it didn’t cost much) and he’s really pleased he did so. I have always been really underwhelmed by the quality of the original LCD screen (dull and washed out), and so totally would support buying the OLED, even for the occasional handheld use.

Asked for this thread to be unlocked as I didn't think it warranted a new topic.

Slightly different question. Please can the Geekzone brains trust talk me out of buying a Switch?

I don't know what it is but for some reason lately I've developed a want for a Switch. I know it's 7yrs old and the rumours say that Nintendo will replace it next year but I still want one. I've been in the Playstation scene for many years but before that I've had a few Nintendo consoles (NES, SNES & Wii). I think its because I recently got into some Retro gaming with my Anbernic RG35XX-H that I've rediscovered my love for fun Nintendo 2D/3D platformers.

Please help me avoid making a mistake!

This isn't helping, but if I'm honest this was the response I was expecting/hoping for from this community.

I don’t think it’s worth the upgrade to the oled modal if that makes its better :)

Still not helping. If I did buy one it would probably be the OLED model. We have a holiday home where I would leave the dock to play on the TV there but would bring the console home with me to play handheld when not there.

We have switch lites for the kids and got the console in 2022 , wasn’t worth us updating to the OLED modal. Definitely recommend the switch it’s just fun to play. Good luck with your purchase enjoy :)

My reply probably won't help if you want to be talked out of it but I bought mine early June from a Geekzone member after spending a a year or so wanting one and forever deciding otherwise. Definitely worth it and 0 regrets, only have a couple of games playing on the go but I find Animal Crossing super therapeutic to play after I've come back from work and just need to chill.

Getting OLED vs other model really depends if you're picky with the screen quality but I opted for OLED. Quality is notably different, I use the console handheld when I can't be bothered turning the TV on and it's definitely better.
