Senecio:

Any first thoughts from those who picked one up? I managed to score one as a walk-in to a local JB HiFi here on the Gold Coast yesterday. I wasn’t able to pre-order due to my travel plans but all the information said they would be plentiful on launch day so I was cautiously optimistic I wouldn’t miss out.

I’ve only had a short play so far as I’m here to visit family not play games. But first impressions are pretty good so far. The only real down side so far is battery life but I guess that’s the compromise with such a powerful hand held console.

How do you find the screen quality for not being OLED? I am personally going to wait for the OLED version to be released before picking one up.

The screen is fine. I never had a OG or OLED switch so I can’t compare but LCD panels have come a long way since the OG switch.

So far so good, but similar to series X and ps5, early doors it's effectively a switch pro. Generally speaking switch one games run smoother and it's a more pleasant experience.

The screen is fine, sure it's not an oled but it looks good enough for most people. The bigger size is welcome and feels less cramped than the original model, still not comfortable for long stints but better none the less.

MKW is different I'll give it that. Fine as a game but I'm not a fan of the go mode that you have to play to get the character unlocks and extra tracks. The first race is normal but the last 3 are driving between courses and then round maybe next track once. The between track sections have too many straights and are too wide for my liking, when you race a track for 3 laps it's much more fun to me. I'm sure it'll grow in me and still be fun, it's just a bit different and the first MK game since the original that I feel like I've had to learn now to drive the karts to get the best out of them.

Happy to field any questions but I don't have NSO at the moment to try things like the Zelda upgrades.

The screen is a massive upgrade over the non oled switch I think it’s excellent for an lcd. I like that the console is larger but at the same time it’s obvious also heavier

People keep harping on about waiting for the OLED but here's the kicker, OLED doesn't work well with VRR as it produces flickering in the image. I don't see it will be on the Switch 2 until there's a solution for VRR OLED flicker as its a handheld specific feature to make the games run smoother, it would be cool to have because the Switch 1 OLED is just amazing

The flicker in the switch oled was from PWM, especially below 50% brightness. General VRR flicker on oled reeeeally depends on the panel/model of screen. It also depends on framerate fluctuations which consoles tend to have smooth frametimes. If it’s at a constant time then there is no brightness delta and no flicker. This affects lcd’s too if they can’t handle changes in brightness either.

Not saying there isn't but I didn't notice any flicker from my Switch 1 OLED, again it doesn't support VRR.

Rtings done a cover on this where IPS tech performed far better with VRR than OLED couinterparts - issue seems to show more on games with dark scenes more than brighter areas.

Also ROG Ally uses a VRR LCD panel, Steam Deck uses OLED with no VRR, doesn't look like there are any OLED panels in the smaller formfactor with VRR support. Would I prefer OLED > yes but with Switch going all in on VRR it won't happen until price is cheap and VRR is stable because Nintendo.
