Baboon: I already have interleaving turned off, assuming Xnet got that right.

Do a tracert to a NZ server eg:  games11.gameplanet.net.nz first external hop should be ~16ms, it it's much higher than that I suspect interleaving is still on.

I've never asked to have interleaving turned off, so who knows what my line is doing.

Wow Regs, how much is that fibre costing you? I assume its for business purposes? Thats like a LAN ping.
Also your ADSL has interleaving on from looking at those.

yeah, the fibre is for business. we have 10mbps access provisioned so its a bit more costly. i can't give you the actual cost but can tell you that the fibre access is costing somewhere between $500 and $600 a month..... plus internet bandwidth plan on top. We do use a 2mbps vlan on the same fibre for voice though which replaces a PRI connection.

There are/were other, cheaper, fibre options if you're in a building covered by vector - from memory there was a plan available for about $300 per month that gave you fibre access, unlimited national and 25gb international. Not sure if the same is still available - it was resold via vector partners such as orcon

I play on AAO 2 and get around 180-200ms on the aussie server Bridge Crossing map. Yet no problems with gameplay. In World of Warcraft I use to get 400ms but MMO's are quite different compared to shooters where good ping counts, but in MMOS you can still play well with 400ms only till you do a 25man raid I would get Dc'd out of the game cause latency would hit the roof - 1300-1500ms!

Then i came across this site www.smoothping.com for wow players - uses two apps - Putty and Freecap you load them and choose a server not the server the game loads you into but in my case i choose Los Angeles1 with this program latency drops from 400ms to 196ms. That's a 200ms drop.

Wonder if theirs such a thing like smoothping available for online FPS games?

Those lower ping type services help with delayed tcp/ip acknowledgements for mmo's hosted very far away (ie: USA). Basically most mmo servers won't send more data packets until they receive an acknowledgement packet.  So because sending the data packet takes ~200ms from the server to you then waiting for the acknowledgement packet to return from you to the server takes 200ms you end up with ~400ms latency.

SSH proxies resolve the problem by making it seem like the player is coming from a local US connection.

It would be of no use at all for NZ fps servers, since the route from your ISP to the servers should already be short and FPS servers don't behave in the same way as MMO servers.

I play Dota on bored aussie and I get 20ms to people in NZ with max upload and interleaving off and about 50-60ms to Australians..

Playing on local CS servers I get about 10ms..

So yes? I think its viable..

OP, have you got a max upload plan?

I have supposedly fullspeed/fullspeed and I get nowhere near the low latency you and others mention here *sigh*

Open the run window (windows key + r)
Type in: cmd

I play alot of Combat Arms on the American servers.. No idea what the ping times are but its still more than playable. You get the occasional lag - although in saying that the Americans are complaining about lag alot more than we are :)

You tracert is under 20ms which seems fairly normal for an ADSL connection with interleaving off. You should be getting pretty low pings on local FPS servers.

I would probably point the finger at Xnet's network performance based on their poor track record in 2008/2009.

What games do you play mostly anyway?

Locally the Quake series mostly. Internationally - WoW, Diablo 1 & 2, Warcraft II & III, Starcraft, Master of Orion II (yes, people still play that), Marathon Aleph One, Nintendo DS online titles like Animal Crossing and Mario Kart...
