I bought a Wii in 2008, played it endlessly some days and the thing barely warmed up, only slightly warm air coming out of the fan vent and there was a good amount of air flow, that lady is telling you BS to make more money on her sale.

Personally I don't bother with big box retailers at all if I can avoid them. In your case the bad experience was with Harvey Norman, but there are just as many horror stories about all the others.

It sounds like she was either referring to the xbox or ps3.

NonprayingMantis: I believe that if a defect is pointed out prior to purchase, then that defect will not be covered by the CGA or even any warranty. So actually by saying that these models overheat she has actually just excluded that issue from the very warranty coverage she was trying to sell you. Sounds bizarre doesn?t it?

?If a defect was pointed out to you before you bought the good, then it doesn't count towards making it unacceptable.?

I think that clause applies more to shop soiled or second hand goods, where it may have got damaged or scratched. As under the CGA goods must be free from minor defects, which contradicts that statement. But in this case they would actually need to provide it in writing that the goods have a known fault, as otherwise what the staff member said is just hearsay.

tonyhughes:
robjg63: Your call if you want to complain about her. You probably should at least to HN. Fairgo and Target etc have already done the 'be carefull about extended warrantty things though' - Cant see what you would gain going to them.

tonyhughes: and probably ping Fair Go and Campbell (not looking for a big thing out of this, but useful for them if they are already investigating these sorts of things).

As above, not looking to gain anything, but they need to be held to account for this kind of carryon, as I'm sure people who arent savvy would purchase the warranty for fear of the item developing the imaginary fault that that salesperson told them "they all have" that supposedly is not covered by the manufacturers warranty.

So after all that, have the boys gotten anywhere near the kinect, or is dad still 'checking it works'?

I JUST purchased a laptop from them, was supposed to be $1499 with 30% off ended up around $1050... But get the box home and find out that the RRP is $1199. So pissed off right now going to go to the Porirua store, waste of 2 hours!

That would be gutting, but I guess you did save $150, which is still 10% ish
Was 1199 the lowest price it was on pricespy, or was that the actual RRP the manufacturers provide? Or was that the white label price on the box. Retailers can price above the RRP if they want, and I see it happen a lot. Many other retailers who regularly have these huge discount sales often price will above the RRP, and the sale then brings the price closer to the RRP price. Kiwis love to get a bargain, and the impression you are getting a good deal is a big reason why many people buy something they probably don't even need.

Back when I worked for DSE we had a steady trail of dissatisfied Harvey Norman customers looking to crack their wallets out, with the majority of them citing issues with warranty claims.

The classic one I've found is when you go to return an item which cannot be repaired and/or or is no longer made, Sales person offers a new cheaper model as a one-for-one swap without offering the balance in vouchers or cash.

It's sad but if you make enough noise at the counter or a big enough scene they usually buckle by the time a manager is called as too many people have witnessed an injustice while waiting to pay. I have no shame in getting what's owed to me.

Dunnersfella: If you got the sales persons name, ping the Twitter feed for Harvey Norman, or contact them via their website. A mate told me that it goes DIRECTLY to the head of HN NZ...

+ 1 to that. That's what I did last year after going to HN enquiring about an external HDD and came across rude/lazy staff who ended up telling me to go to Noel Leeming to buy it (?!?!). Tweeting worked in my favour too Laughing

Harvey Norman's sister company Norman Ross have dodgy pricing practices too. I bought an expensive vacuum cleaner there that I was told was 'on special'. However afterwards I discovered that I paid $3 more than the standard everyday price at Harvey Norman.
"We'll treat you right" - yeah right.
Entirely my own fault for not shopping around, but most appliance retailers (including HN) were shut due to earthquake damage (or did not sell the make and model I wanted).
