Not really impressed with the teardown, I appreciate 'simple' and elegant designs like this and expect consumer electronics to generally shrink over time.

Even after watching it, I cant work out why the console is so big, the cooling system is nothing amazing (it looks like it was lifted from a gaming laptop).

Cooling is exactly why it's so big.  The heatsink is massive.  Cooling noise has been one of the biggest issues with the PS4 generation.  You're comparing Apples with pumpkins in that link.  The use cases are different.  The MacBook is mobile.  It needs to be light and portable.  A console sits on a shelf for all of its life.  Why not have it a bit bigger than previous generations if it means you can throw better specs in there and make it quieter at the same time?

I thought it was pretty simple and elegant! Yes it was physically large, but the way it fits together and has function driving form really appealed - as did the user-serviceable elements.

By all accounts it runs very quiet and very cool - something that Macbooks can't really lay claim to when they are going flat out.

Plus the GPU is orders of magnitude more powerful than what you would fine in any Macbook or slim-factor laptop, so I don't reckon that is a meaningful comparison.

I agree. It looks like it's well designed with dust catches, ability to install additional storage,  ability to change the outside panels, and the heat sink should help with keeping it cool, and thus quiet. All up, very positive about it's design!

It's a gaming device, not a 'sleek' laptop. The thing is going to be smashing it out for hours on end with no rest. I'd want them to have a fairly robust cooling solution to facilitate this.

I wouldn’t care if it was the size of subwoofer as long as it quiet. Once plugged in and setup it isn’t going to move so size really isn’t an issue.

It helps that I have a custom entertainment unit that has plenty of space for expansion.

by now, no one should be worried about heat issue for the PS5 but just in case, the cooling system will be optimized even further post release by firmware :)

this might be the first time I stick with original console release as the heat solution and external swappable panel won't make me get a slim version of the console

Cooling should really be a function of hardware rather than of firmware. Firmware updates to help with cooling usually involve CPU throttling etc something I want no part of.

“We have a plan to optimise the fan control based on this data.” Further context from 4Gamer.net adds: “PS5 has three temperature sensors on the main board to control the fan speed based on the internal temperature of the APU and the highest temperature of the three temperature sensors. These fan control parameters will also be updated via online updates.”

I'm no expert but the above quote is straight from Yasuhiro Otori, for me what matters the most is that the cooling system might get even better over time

The cooling system will not get better over time, software engineers will tune heat generated or active cooling over time.

There are limited ways they can do that, they either throttle the CPU/GPU, or they increase/decrease active cooling (fans) use.

The only way there will be improvements on this hardware iteration is if there is general system tweaks but that will be more invisible to users. I have no doubt that they'll revise and improve the hardware over time and there will be the inevitable slim model at some point with better thermals.

I wish there was a way to downvote as this post definitely qualifies.

I fully agree. I think the PS5 is beautifully designed both inside and out - and appears to be beautifully made. Sony look they are justifiably proud of what they have achieved with it - which is why they took the unusual step of doing their own teardown.

Not unusual for Sony.  They did a teardown of the PS4 or PS3, same guy too.
