berrys: Hmmm, I was hoping that it would have tv tuners for live tv and dvr capability, but I guess that would be hard for the different tv signals around the world. having a hdmi in allows for your set top box to be connected, but you still have to switch interfaces etc. not having tuners/dvr capability probably keeps the cost down too.

here's hoping the usb/ethernet ports could be used to add a homerun like device in future!

I expect MS to take all steps to limit this that they can and offer as little flexibility in an effort to give themselves control, which is understandable. They need to control as much of the device as possible to ensure that people get a consistent experience no matter where they are, and to reduce their support footprint.

It can be frustrating to those of us who would like more control and flexibility but understand we are by far in the minority.

I like the direction it is taking and the media device. If successful I can see a rationalisation of the need for multiple home theatre devices. So Yay!

However I am skeptical regarding the ability for Microsoft to launch an equivalent service here in NZ that they just showed.

I am thinking about on demand content, tv integration, the ESPN stuff etc. Now unless they have solved the monopoly situation with Sky, or will solve, it would be very prudent to wait and see a console up and running in NZ and see what services it provides or more to the point doesnt.

Otherwise it is just a cloud based 360 with a bluray drive.

They really need to put a DVB-T tuner in there, would make the whole tv-thru-xbox thing work for the rest of the world

Completely disagree, tv providers here should just have apps which stream tv to the xbox. Things are going streaming (some argue they dont want this, but they can still watch normal tv), so by making xbox movies, xbox tv shows, tv on demand, quickflix. we can still get a lot of the features here in nz. And by streaming the shows you want to watch, you dont need to record them.

So sure, some stuff wont work here (espn, hulu etc) (might be able to trick the xbox into letting you like you can do with the 360), but enough should, and the life span of the xbox means in 5 years it will still be around and perhaps things will have changed by then.

Now with the HDMI In does that mean I can plug in mySky HD and record down off there to the Xbox One? then down to my NAS?

I don't think the Xbox One HDD can record. I think the HDMI in is just a passthrough.

I was thinking I would buy the new Xbox's but after seeing it I doubt I will.

I wish that the renaming of games for windows to Xbox would mean that the games could be played on both Xbox or pc. Seen they loose money on console sales you would think they would want that.

I don't necessarily like the argument over specs. The article by AnanTech (http://www.anandtech.com/show/6972/xbox-one-hardware-compared-to-playstation-4/) goes through it quite well and talks about both the cost of the hardware and cost in terms of power.

Both consoles have a lot going for them and yes the PS4 having great specs may help it in terms of raw power, but certain things like multiple operating systems will make switching between games/dash/movies a lot smoother than the PS4 would.

It also comes down to how the developers work. The good news is that both consoles have similar hardware meaning devs won't have to make stupid ports (especially to PCs) so in all likelihood the games won't be better over either console.

This quote in the article probably sums it up best and helps to explain why games are no longer just the priority for Microsoft and the Xbox One:

"In its presentation Microsoft kept referencing how the world has changed. Smartphones, tablets, even internet connectivity are very different today than they were when the Xbox 360 launched in 2005. It’s what Microsoft didn’t mention that really seems to have played a role in its decision making behind the One: many critics didn’t see hope for another generation of high-end game consoles.

With so much of today focused on mobile, free to play and casual gaming on smartphones and tablets - would anyone even buy a next-generation console?"

I will. I prefer to play my games on a 106" Projector with massive surround sound speakers and comfortable couches.

I don't agree. There is no comparison between angry birds on a smartphone with a 5" screen and gaming on a PC or Console. I believe the death of everything not mobile is greatly exaggerated.

curious to know, what was it about the console reveal that made you decide not to buy?

Agreed. Power is only good if it is harnessed well.

I chose the original Xbox over the PS2 due to better specs on paper, and the latter firmly won that round. I then originally chose the PS3 over the 360 (although I now have both) due to the same reasons. While the PS3 finished strongly, I'd say that the 360 reigned supreme for most of this generation.
