I have all the current gen consoles and in terms of ranking them if I had to only have 1 it would easily be:

1) Wii U (really, WiiU + PC would be sufficient for 99% of my gaming needs)
2) Xbox One
3) PS4

I have no doubt PS4 will pick up once some of its better exclusives start to arrive (Uncharted, Gran Turismo, etc) but at the moment I own 1 full retail game for the PS4, plus some of the free PS+ games, it gets used 99% of the time for Netflix.

The Xbox One for me has:

Positives:
- Better controller (subjective, but I hated the PS3 controller and the PS4 one is really just a tarted up DS3)
- Much faster network connectivity (games and patches download usually twice as fast from Xbox Live as they do from PSN)
- Good integration with home theater equipment (IR blaster can turn the home theater on and off with the console as well as controller volume, channel, etc)
- Microsoft appears to have seen the error of their ways and are renewing their focus on games rather than media

Negatives:
- awful UI (apparently being changed soon)
- less powerful than PS4 (noticeable if you are into that sort of thing, but not really significant for most people as long as developers target good performance first and foremost)
- larger footprint (in terms of unit size, still pretty average size for a piece of HT equipment though)

PS4:

Positives:
- More powerful
- PS+ games (mostly pretty average indy games at the moment, but should pick up soon hopefully)
- Good exclusives coming soon

Negative:
- Awful controller (subjective again, but objectively the battery life is terrible)
- Online services much slower and less polished
- Console produces more fan noise (not an issue if you just turn the volume up!, apparently being fixed in a hardware revision soon)
- UI is simple but very frustrating that you cant arrange anything the way you want it (anything you havent played in a while ends up in a big dump folder, jumbled up with everything else)  

Wild card! WiiU!:

Positives:
- Unique games not available anywhere else
- The games that are on the system are polished to a level of quality not really seen on either of the other consoles
- Controller works as a pretty functional home theater universal remote
- Can be had very cheap on special

Negatives:
- Almost no 3rd party support (most popular mainstream games simply don't exist on the system)
- Only really graphically comparable with last generation's consoles


In the end I would go and try these things out, if you have a JBHifi or EB games near you they should have display versions of the consoles out so you can try out the controllers and user interfaces. Beyond that, take a look at the games available and the games that are coming out in genres that you are interested in. Its no use having a console with none of the games you want, no matter how nice it may be to use.
