I feel like I only have time for one good RPG a year these days.  Last year it was Assassin's Creed Origins.  Spent about 2-3 months playing that.  Then the rest of the year was broken up into smaller narrative games. I'm facing a real dilemma now that RDR2 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey are either coming soon or out now respectively.  I want to play both, I don't know how that will fly on the home front :)

 

I am in for a big end of year. RDR2, Just Cause 4, which I absoloutely can't wait for, and I am still deciding, given I am not that far into AC:Origins, if I should just skip to Odessey?

As experienced gamers, what titles would you recommend to someone trying out gaming for the first time?  And I mean for a pretty much total newbie who's not particularly coordinated! I'm looking for games that will hone the basic skills needed before moving onto more advanced titles.

 

My boys will finally have saved their half of the money for a PS4 this month, and we've already bought a bunch of games in advance. I've bought A Way Out, Unchartered 4, Heavy Rain, and The Last of Us; the kids have Fifa, No Man's Sky, Little Big Planet 3, Battlefront 1&2, Skylanders Imaginators, and Skylanders Superchargers. Would any of these (including the kids' ones) act as a good primer?

ACO is fantastic, stick with it.  The amount of detail they put into ancient Egypt is staggering.

I agree, it really is amazing, and it's an era I have some interest in, but not as much as some. I'll finish up GOW, AC:BF and Zero Horizon Dawn and see how I go.

My kids are 7 and nearly 11; the more 'adult-suitable' titles I mentioned I'd bought are going to be for me only (well, other than A Way Out - I've specifically bought that title as it's two-player, as I'm going to try to get my wife interested! I have also bought her Just Dance), while the others we've bought for the boys and are the only ones they'll be allowed to play.

 

Ok, Uncharted will be my first title to try, though I'm also happy to buy other titles if they'd provide a better intro to gaming. My oldest kid is really keen on Spiderman, so this may well be a title to look at getting sooner rather than later.

 

Any other titles that would be worth purchasing? I'm thinking I'll join the kids with playing some of their titles, as I'll probably learn more from watching them!

Does Just Dance for PS4 require the Move controllers?

SpartanVXL:  When I started out I had the original Ratchet and Clank series along with Jak and Dakster. Back then these were the adventure games that got me my controller skills.

Good to know; I'll keep an eye out for these, as I know my kids will be keen - I'll probably get a similar value out of some of their games like Big Little Planet 3.

Tzoi: Does Just Dance for PS4 require the Move controllers?

I don't believe so (well, it better not!); my understanding, based off reading the box, is all it requires is a phone to operate as a camera, so it doesn't even need the PS camera.

Is it worth getting the Move controllers and/or the PS camera?

My kids are really keen on the idea of games that allow the use of such a controller to act as a lightsaber or similar, but it doesn't seem like there's a huge range of such titles for PS4.

@jonathon18 if you've got Uncharted 4, I would recommend getting the Uncharted remastered trilogy as they go a long way to filling in the characters and their storyline/relationships. Makes playing UC4 much more enjoyable. Spider man is a great game and my 2 boys love it, as do I. Ratchet and Clank is good as well, Metal Gear Solid 5, The Witcher 3 GoT edition....there are so many good games out there you are sure to find one that you like. Best thing is, most of these have been out a while and be bought relatively cheaply.

If you're into narrative games I highly rate the Telltale games.  I'm gutted about the recent news of the studio closure.  The Walking Dead series is one of my favourites, and some of the more obscure titles like The Wolf Among Us are absolutely brilliant.  Their more well known properties like Guardians of the Galaxy and Tales of the Borderlands are also really cool.  They're kind of like pick-a-path adventures for the digital age.

I have never played online games because I thought I wouldn’t be good or quick enough but this may be the game that changes my mind to give it a go.

Lot of retro gamers keep going on about "Oregon Trail" - finally sat down and tried it (https://playclassic.games/game/play-the-oregon-trail-online/play/) , it seems familiar, but around that era there were a lot of similar sort of games I guess...... don't think I ever had a copy of it myself.

Civilisation 6 just came out on iOS for iPhone and iPad.  Bloody brilliant, basically the full complete game with touch optimisation.  I've been waiting for something like this ever since the iPad was announced years ago!  Now we just need Warcraft 2 and 3, Red Alert, and Lemmings!

Yep - been playing it on the iPad for a while and the conversion to the iPhone is really impressive. A great port and one I will be very grateful for on my upcoming flight to the UK.
