Kaos36: Another World was the first game i played on pc, and a side scrolling shooter called mansion or something where you ran through houses with a shotty blasting zombies. First FPS games were Duke nukem and Quake which both came out the same time or few months apart. One game that got me glued to the monitor was 'Aces of the Deep' Where you commanded a German U-boat in the Atlantic during World War II sinking british shipping. Was fantastic as the campaign was dynamic meaning each time you went on patrol it was different. I played that game for about 2 yrs.

well dog i suggest you get out the history books and do some reading. Uboat sailors weren't all pro nazis many of them resented hitler. Yes the 'uboat pearl' as Winston churchill once put it - "The only thing that frightened me during the war was the Uboat pearl" - The Uboat men or 'Greywolves' they were named had one option in mind to stop the allied shipping they didn't go for how many englishmen they killed they were more concerned about sinking tonnage <-- thats all that mattered on both sides when it comes to submariners was tonnage the more ships sunk the better. Of course like on both sides sadly sailors had to die while sinking the tonnage. Many stories from ex british sailors tell of times of German Uboat sailors throwing them food and ciggarettes and giving them directions on which way to start rowing in their lifeboats. One famous story is after they sunk a tanker they found one englishman survivor in the water covered in oil and minutes away from drowning, the captain ordered his men to bring him aboard, he at the time thought he was going to be beaten /tortured and thrown to the sharks (due to english propaganda back then on how terrible the Uboat men are) but they instead cleaned him up, gave him some thing to eat and prvided him ciggarettes. Cause they were within 200 miles from britain the captain sailed as close to shore as possible and dropped him off on one of their own inflatables. Later on Hitler found out what the uboat men were doing so ordered that any more of this would result in a court martial. Still many helped out when they could knowing they could be shot for it if found out.

There is a war movie called 'Das Boot' made by a german based on a true story on one uboat serving in the atlantic. Made in the 70s its still is one of the best movies to come out about submariners compared to the hollywood crap today. Das Boot at the time got a standing ovation by the british veiwers when it was first air their in the 70s'.

Of course not all uboat men were like this some were cruel where the mowing down of sailors in the water was the norm. But far more saw their british foes as one of them so did what they could to comfort them after they lost their ship.

War its either you or them.

Now excuse me but im bout to load up Silent Hunter 3 and sink me some tonnage! lol

That has to be the coolest story i have heard about U-boats in forever, i applaud you for your defence of the cause and well done. It makes that story about U-571 all hollywood crap.

Actually released 1982. Good movie, one of my first DVDs.

Ahh yes your correct why was i thinking of the 70s? Anyways I first got the video cassette tape of Das boot the directors cut then few years ago brought the dvd version of directors cut. But im told the best version to get is not the directors cut as it leaves out alot of the original. Could never find a non directors cut in NZ. Also would be great if TVNZ put out the Das boot tv series I think its 6 episodes all up that too is the same as the orginal movie.

I watched Das boot over the weekend (for like the 50th time) and must admit the acting as in the facial expressions when being depth charged cracks me up everytime, they over do it abit. Good movie as in story wise, as for some of the acting its pretty comical at times.

The Bard's Tale was my favourite from the first moment I played it on my friend's Amiga 500, as well as the sequel. That level of customization of your characters appealed to the OCD side of my personality. I was actually surprised that the "reimagined" Bard's Tale that was released a few years ago (with Cary Elwes voicing the main character) was such a good wee budget game, even though it lacked that central aspect of customization (and had almost no other relationship to the original.)

I also loved a relatively obscure "Mad Max" style game called Europa. The whole game was a strategic wonder, and I was still learning all the concepts I now take for granted.

Then there was Elite. I cannot begin to express the horror that manual docking brought to my young life-and yet I still played it for hours at a time.

I played The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy text game and was delighted that it was so much more playful and well-thought-out than the standard text-based games I had been playing on my Commodore 16. Not to mention it was nice to play a game based on material that had the active input of the author. I think that's where I developed my love for MUDs, which in turn led on to MMOs...

And need I metion the revelation that was Samantha Fox Strip Poker? I think not.
