Skolink: Wait - it's jumped to 93% complete!! I will be playing to night (maybe)!

Surely you could return it to the shop to say it is unusable, especially if it is not completing the download. That is pretty poor that you have to first register and download a huge update which is probably the best part of $10 in data charges. That should be advertised on the retail box in your store.

by purchasing and activating the game you are agreeing to steams terms and conditions

gz ftw

No, it really wasn't.  It really did download 6GB.  Maybe I should send Gearbox an invoice for the $12.

The SSA cannot override the law.  If the game is not fit for purpose (and being a game, not starting would definitely qualify as not fit) then you have the right to a refund no matter what Valve says.  That's not even taking into account that the SSA does not have the full force of law anyway as you have no ability to consider it prior to purchase.

gutted man, you can download it at the end of your billing month and just play the game in offline mode. It tells you it requires an internet connection on the box. It updates so you can play the latest version of the game without having to find and install patches by yourself. easy :)

And this is why i stay away from Steam related games...   frakn updating before playing?!

They could have at least given the consumer the option to play the game un-patched.

I followed Steam Support instructions to clean the Steam folder to fix the stuck on 'preparing to launch game' issue, which resulted in me being locked out by Steamguard for 2 days. I didn't get the email with the code, and no response from Steam Support. After their system started working again and emailed me a code, they finally got back to me.

I was quite annoyed when I got Starcraft II retail to have to create an EA online account in order to play, and have to enter a password just to load the game. Pathetic.

Are there *any* games available these days that do not require an internet connection, and which have a LAN mode? Microsoft games used to be good in that way, but I haven't bought one very recently.

Back to Duke though, I being trying out the multiplayer, but the always-on VoIP is so stupid, and people just don't respond when you tell them to mute their mics.

August 1, 2011 - Steam client update released
...
Fixed retail disc install not using all available files causing additional downloads in some cases.

Anyone installed Duke retail since yesterday?
