Don't bother with Duke Nukem Forever retail. I bought it tonight and of course was forced to register on Steam.
What really annoys me though is that it has a 6Gb update that I have to download before I can play.

What was the point of the disk?!?!

Of course if you buy online you still have to pay US$80 even though the rest of the world (other than Oz) get it for US$50.

Does anyone know if it is possible to just play the retail version without the update? I've already exceeded my data cap this month.

thats what i was thinking when i saw the tread.
I Pre-ordered it from CD-Wow

As for the updating, the disk should install the game...if there doesnt happen to be an internet connection to look for updates it wont know there is one and should launch?
Id try disabling network before launching it.

I dont have my copy yet, so cant say for sure.

I wish I could tell you. Disabling my network connection once it is past the authentication stage (can't install otherwise) doesn't help. "This game is not ready to be played in Offline Mode".

Up yours Steam. Up yours very muchly!!

It does copy 6Gb of data from the disk. Why a 6Gb update? Surely they haven't switched to yet another game engine between publishing the DVDs and releasing online? Maybe I'll get to play it in another 12 years...
I'm not paying $18 to Telstra to download the update. $100 at EB Games was quite enough (albeit $90 of that was gift vouchers).

Correct

It's basically importing/decrypting the content already there on the hard disk from the disk install.

It is necessary to authenticate every Steam game online, whether purchased via Steam itself or installed via a retail disc, the first time it is played.

After the initial authentication, an offline mode allows games to be run without being connected to your Steam account

Anyway apparently around 70% of games use Steam or Steamworks now so this shouldn't be surprising to you.

One big notable exception is Blizzard who of course use their own battle.net platform.

400Mb update (but it shows as a 6400Mb download of which you should have 6000Mb already).

I had to reinstall by using the windows Run
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:
(substitute E: for your DVD drive)

The first time I installed by just launching from the DVD is was going to download the entire 6400Mb (I let it download for a while just to see).

Oh yeah Gearbox seem to like regional pricing for some reason, I usually get a friend in Canada or UK to gift me games that are have an outrageous difference in price and just pay them via paypal or something.

Firaxis for Civ V is another lame one.

Plenty of other publishers do just have the same price in USD for NZ which is how it should be imo!

At the end of the day you can always amuse yourself by listening to this Megadeth version of the Duke Nukem theme on repeat...

I read somewhere that there is/was a bug in the updater which caused it to try downloading the whole game through Steam. If I can find the link again Ill post it here

From memory I was playing the game after about 20 minutes from the start of the install, I did notice an update from steam, but it didn't take long. As for game. Its a bit corny, the AI isn't probably the best, but, I like the humour and I am a dukenukem fan from way back. 8-)
