This sort of thing really irks me. I've been able to survive without a full HD TV with my 360/wii/PS3 but now I think if I want to really enjoy the PS4 i'd do well to have a TV upgrade too. But this all means the $649 turns into ~$2500 for a new gaming system :P Damn you Sony, damn you all for making such a good looking platform!

NZtechfreak: Man, the PS4 seems like so much win! Really glad for Sony, who need some wins about now. Can't believe the tidal wave of anti-Microsoft sentiment right now, so many xbox fans changing because of the restrictions they have imposed. Hope on purchase day that they go through with it and send MS a strong message about what consumers think of DRM and restrictions on the freedoms of end-users.

MS may get some wins when the price differential for games is announced
Great to have the DRM free option but get ready to pay the price for it

I doubt it.

I can sell and share/borrow my games on the PS4, buy second hand or from anywhere in the world as it is region free. MS can stick their DRM where the sun don't shine, I for one won't accept their policy in exchange for slightly cheaper (or even more than slightly cheaper) new games. Just don't think there is a case to be made there.

kind of strange for Sony to have the PS4 region free as they were so much behind regional  locking of Blu-ray..

Where they?

PS3, PSP, PS Vita are all region free.  PS2 would play games from all PAL regions

BR Disc games were open region, Movies were region locked. This is not a Sony controlled thing. This is a Blu-Ray Consortium issue.

Not all.  And Sony != Blu-ray, there were multiple companies involved, and multiple movie companies that wanted restrictions.

PS3 noob here.

I have it for one reason, F1 2012. But I wish to venture further, gaming wise. Is the HDD in the PS3/4 just for downloaded games and purchased movies? Can I install a game onto the HDD to avoid using the disk?

I believe this is how it will work in both new generation consoles, though with 4K likely to become more popular a 500GB Hard disk isn't likely to last long.

Tks for the quick reply.

Billgates mentioned that the PS4, you still need the disk in to play, thereby allowing the possibility of the disk failing at some point. It cannot be loaded to the HDD to play disk free?

I have to admit I have not read that the PS4 will not require the disc to play anywhere so I would assume that you would still need it.

On a side note it looks like that some PS4 F2PMMO's will not require PS+ to play which makes sense really being that they make their money on micro-transactions.

I haven't seen it specifically mentioned anywhere, but given you can download games from psn completely to your hard drive, I don't see why they would require the disc.
Having said, that, if they are allowing you to sell games second hand, then allowing you to rip it completely to hdd would mean people could just buy a game, rip it, then sell it immediately, which obviously wouldn't be very good for Sony.

Ripping it is a good point. I assume if I had to factory reset the PS3/4 then I can re download for free? If so, then its probbaly a better practice to use the cloud to buy from, and store and play from HDD, best of both worlds

That's how it currently works. You buy a game from PSN and you can redownload it as many times as you need, even if your PS craps itself and you need to buy a new one. The downside to PSN is it's quite expensive compared to the likes of EB.
