I wish the discless version was viable, but we get price gouged on digital versions when they should in fact be half of the retail since we're avoiding shipping a physical item, paying staff to sell it etc.

PS5 show today was quite meh tbh.

Nothing to make me pick up a PS5 near launch, so a couple of years down the line it will be.

Looks like at this point I will be trading up to a Series X near launch as an upgraded gamepass machine.

I do love that Sony are just going for one powerful console (as the discless version is 100% the same hardware other than lack of disc drive), plain & simple.

I'm quite clued on with the tech world and even I have trouble understanding the different variants of Xbox X/S/Series X/Series S, Gamepass etc.

With Sony it'll be "here's the PS5, and here are the PS5 games".

Any update on official NZ pricing yet?

So $50 price difference in usd between the two versions equates to nigh on $200 here? Ugh

Edit. Oops it's $100 difference in the USA

It will be the digital edition for me. I've been exclusively digital since the PS4 was launched back 2014 and I have no need for a UHD BluRay drive as I stream everything. I find that with a couple of overseas PS accounts setup and sites like PSPrices below to monitor what's on sale I can generally offset the digital price premium. I just can't be arsed with physical media anymore.

I think this is where we are seeing the two companies strategies diverging.

Microsoft has pivoted to being a Software-as-a-Service company, who sells hardware as a means to an end. Their Xbox products are structured this way: GamePass (Netflix for games), All Access (like an interest free mobile plan, one monthly fee for the game pass service + repayments on a console), Play Anywhere (buy it once on Xbox or Windows PC, use on both) etc. I guess they are also trying to diversify the line-up for different buyers as well; Xbox Series X is going for the full HTPC/gaming experience, whereas Xbox Series S is trying to appeal to the more casual gamer crowd.

Sony seems to be content with the traditional model of sell a high performance console and try to nab as many first-party exclusives as possible. I must admit I am not familiar with the whole PSN experience though, haven't owned one since the venerable PS2. Is Sony doing anything like SaaS to compete with the Xbox?

Point is your shouldn't have to if digital pricing was incentived out of the gate and also if there is one thing I despise about Sony is that their accounts are regionalised. My MS account can bounce around to other countries with me, but Sony? Nah you gotta make a new account because I live in NZ now and not AU because you can't change the country (I have stuck with my AU account as I still have an AU bank account).

Pre-ordered my Digital Edition with Mighty Ape too.

I think the "17–19th delivery" is just because it's marked as a large/bulky item in their system so it throws that default message as perhaps they use different couriers for that (eg. if you ordered a giant gaming chair, it's not going to fit in a typical courier van).

But I imagine being a hot ticket new console launch, they'll make sure they get them delivered on Day 1.

Maybe it won't be the digital edition for me. Anyone else see Mighty Ape's pre-order dates?

Disc edition available from 11-Nov

Discless edition from 18-December!
