Just saw this story about an OS upgrade coming today:

https://www.engadget.com/ps5-first-large-system-update-134908595.html

None of the new features mentioned in this story have any interest for me and will have no impact on the way I use my PS5.

I can see the benefit of USB game storage - but only if it can install updates to the game while in USB storage. I don't want to store it on USB to then find when I move it make to the SSD to play that there's a 50GB update needed.

EDIT:

PS5 titles also cannot be directly downloaded to USB extended storage. However, games that you transfer or copy back to internal storage will automatically update when applicable.

That sounds like they will only update once you move them back to the SSD :(

You can play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage, which lets you save space on your PS5 console storage for PS5 games.

That's something I guess, but presumably loading times for PS4 games will noticeably suffer if played from USB drives

I couldn't wait for Sony to get off their slow backsides and get Internal storage certified (seems like a blantant attempt to simply milk the consumer for more cash), so I bought a SSD USB Drive, with a USB 3.2 Interface. Speeds are great, no issues, no lags, no problems.

If they ever get internal storage sorted, I'll sell my external and move to internal.

I was talking about more affordable spindles. Don't want to buy expensive external SSD storage that I can only play PS4 games from.

You can get the Hybrid Drives. I've not tried them recently. It's around $100 for a 500GB SSD, and $200 for a 1TB. Hybrid might save you 30%, performance will be less than half one would imagine. Resale value more than double. Seems a reasonable reason to go SSD.

Not sure the speed of your internet connection but on a Fibre connection even a large update isn't a long process.

Internet about 950/450. I'm coming from mainly using Xbox, which I have found can sometimes have very slow downloads. I have to admit downloading games on PS5 does seem to be a lot faster than the Xbox Series X (or Xbox One before it).

EDIT: Both Ethernet.

Then to be honest, you don't really need to worry about whether USB Storage updates or not, your updates will be minutes not hours in most cases.

When I know I have a big gaming session coming up, before work in the AM, I turn on my PS5 and then power up the game, which prompts any updates to be installed that were queued. For the times I forget, I think the longest I've ever waited was 10-15 minutes.

This is totally unacceptable.

So don't accept it then.

@networkn Apologies - on re-reading I think this didn't come out quite how I meant it. Sounds a bit rude - sorry, wasn't meant to be.

I was a bit surprised actually, but in the end, I didn't worry too much about it :)

All good.

I've been incredibly impressed with the speed of the PS5. My partner plays a tonne of Fallout 4 (likes to build) and on the PS5 the loading times are mere seconds where on the PS4 Pro it was around 5mins in some cases.

The controllers also - I've been blown away.

But has anyone had any problems with the PS5 dropping its network connection and requiring a reboot when downloading large games?

I like the controller too but I've already had one fail due to stick drift issues, two months after I got it on PS5 Day 1. NL just handed me a new one out of stock, no questions asked.

When I googled it, I found that stick drift problems are already by no means rare.

Which drive did you end up getting?  I was looking at some to use for my PS4 games

In our case my wife and I are also Fallout series players and we have both played for way too many hours in Fallout 76 over the last couple of years.

The loading and fast travel times in this game on the PS4's has been frustrating and painful and the main reason why I wanted to get my hands on the PS5.

Fallout 76 and most other titles are now different 'things' with the PS5 making a huge difference to the gaming experience.

(No problems with our hard wired networking or controllers at this stage.)

Samsung 1TB T7 SSD External. It's brilliant.
