Hi,

I am downloading a huge game from steam at 400Kb/s though I have a 70Mbit connection, and I am wondering IF there are any tips for improving download speeds? Can I force use of a NZ cache or something, force the use of a local server?

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, wasn't really sure where best to put it.

Cheers

You can force NZ caches, but sadly steam changed their distribution system and the existing caches cant cache much of the newer content. If something has been released or updated on steam in the last 6 months, good chance its not on an ISP's cache server.

Moved to correct forum.

Yesterday I downloaded Borderlands at around 5 MB/s with 7 MB/s, with TelstraClear cable, 100 Mbps service. Most likely got it from the TelstraClear's own Steam server.

If your ISP doesn't a Steam server then sorry to say but... sucks to be you.

Seriously though, even though TelstraClear has its own server, if you request a game that's not cached then Steam will download from any other server and you have no control over it. There are ways to configure firewall connections to only allow the program to connect to a specific server though, which will require some manual configuration on your part as well as testing each server to find the one with best speeds - and again if you lockdown to one specific server and the content you want is not there then you won't be able to download...

Managed to get 1.3 MB/S on an ADSL 2 connection which isn't too shabby.... I found that if I picked NZ it would drop back to 400kB, but if I picked Sydney's servers, it was 1.3 MB/s :)

Was downloading updates from steam last night on vodafone adsl2 (mainly updates for Mafia 2) and connected to the telstraclear steam server and I was pulling down data at about 1.6MB/s so that link seems fast
