Hi all,
I've always been a PC gamer but a couple of years ago I bought a PS3 (partly for the bluray player). I have really enjoyed it, even though some of the games I like most are either inferior or unavailable on the console.

Two days ago my house was broked into, and amongst the things they stole was my PS3, controller and a few games. I will get insurance money for the things stolen, and this leaves me with three options on how to respend it:

1/ Replace the PS3 - Plenty of good gaming instantly available, can watch bluray movies again, but its days are numbered
2/ Wait for a PS4 - limited games on launch, will have to go without for the next 6 months, but will have the latest console
3/ Upgrade my PC - my video card is decent, so I'd replace my mobo, CPU and RAM. I'd also go to windows 7 (I'm on vista!)

I have a young family so only one is an option. If it was up to the wife I wouldnt do any of the above three! What option would you take and why?

You say your video card is decent... but what is it? This may have a bearing on which option I'd go for :P

I'm at work and don't 100% remember. I replaced it about 8 months ago, but I think it was a Radeon HD 6850.

Xbox One. Great line up of games at launch. Kinect will let your whole family enjoy family orientated games.

You will find that insurance will want to complete the claim as soon as possible, and so you will either have them replacing PS3, or get cash equivalent payout.

Being from Christchurch, I'm not stranger to insurance claims haha. They will pain an agreed cash amount for the entire settlement, not buy me a ps3.

If i was you, id go with the PS4. For $650 you can't go wrong, the problem with pc gaming is that its a constant upgrade process, with the ps4 you won't have to worry about that for the next 5 years. In the last 3 years ive spent around $2500 keeping my gaming pc current and able to play the games i want to play on max detail.
I wouldn't buy a PS3 at this point in time, after all its about to be replaced, yes it has more games available now but its only a matter of time before its forgotten.
Xbox One is another option and im not biased at all, either one would be a good purchase.

I'd probably go for PS4. yes games library wont be huge at launch, but I beleive Sony are also building a cloud gaming service that enables you to play a massive back catalogue of PS1,2, and 3 games via streaming.

also Playstation plus is awesome and gets you 2-3 new games every month for only $8

I'm in Christchurch, I have PS3, I haven't even got myself Xbox360 even though I've been eyeing on it for years... Probably will end up getting PS4 and PS Vita next year or later. And moving out the Microsoft camp.

I'd personally opt to go for PC gaming because it isn't too expensive to upgrade if you already have a decent GPU and the cost of the components will be outweighed by cheaper games (both in general and due to Steam sales) and the fact you don't have to pay the yearly subscription fees to PS+ or Xbox Live Gold. Also there is already a huge game library available and modding is a big plus on PC.

You also don't HAVE to update your PC constantly in order to play games since as console generations go on the multiplats on console are generally rendered at lower resolutions with lower graphics settings in order to still run. So to get a similar experience you can just do the same on your pc and run at lower settings. i.e. MW3 runs at 1024x600 on PS3 and 360, Halo 4 is run at 720p and so is Uncharted 3. They are just upscaled to 1080p but don't actually run at these resolutions (source: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46241).

Upgrading isn't a curse of the PC but rather it's a luxury and you can choose not to upgrade until the next console cycle or upgrade once a year or so in order to run all your games on max settings. I haven't upgraded my CPU since 2009 with Lynnfield and might upgrade next year to Broadwell and I only upgraded my GPU from a 2009 nVidia 250 to a AMD 7850 last year while having the rest of my components remain the same and I still get High-Ultra gaming at 60fps.

If you go on this route I'd recommend an i5 4430 or 4670k depending on whether you want to overclock, a decent LGA 1150 motherboard and 8GB of RAM which will probably cost you around $500 but will last you for quite a while. You can sell your current components to make some money back.

If you opt for a console I'd say PS4 is probably your best bet due to PS+ seemingly being better value than Gold and the fact that it will cost you less.

If I had only ONE option for my future gaming, I would chose the PS4. You can guarantee that it will have a lot of great exclusives, and almost all of the major PC games will get ported to it.

It's true that just upgrading the PC or replacing the PS3 is cheaper, and if money/budget is the most important factor, I'd probably just replace the PS3 unless there's a specific PC game that you want to play and can't get any other way.

Just a bit of an update.

I was a little wrong about how AMI would want to settle my claim. They have an arrangement with Noel Leemings to pay out the claim value in a voucher to be spent there. They can cash settle, but they will only pay you what they would pay Noel Leemings for the same item (ie if an item has a sticker price of $600 and AMI would only need to pay them $400 for it, they would only pay out $400 cash)

I don't know how big the discount AMI would get through them, but I'm imagining it wouldnt me small and it probably isnt worth cash settling. This would take PC upgrade off the list.

I'm kinda leaning towards a PS4. I know I already have 15 or so Ps3 games, but I very rarely play them again once finished (except things like sports games)

Any more thoughts or consideratoins?

Comes down to Xbox One vs Playstation 4.

Take a look at both consoles, features and services. Exclusives games on offer and then pull the trigger on which suits you.

Do whatever you want to do man.
