I'm really keen to try one of the dev kits just to see what the immersion experience is like.

Has anyone tried it?  Does anyone in Wellington have one I could try?

I have one and am in Wellington but I'm about to go overseas for a couple months. It is quite an experience but definitely needs a higher res screen. It also makes me feel a little bit motion sick (which I haven't had anywhere else) when I move the character via keyboard for over 10 or so mins. Being static and looking around is ok though.

Nooooo don't go :-)

You don't want to sell it?  Or rent it out for the weekend? :-)

I don't live in Wellington but I've tried Oculus Rift.
It's a good device if you're willing to play single player games for less than 2 hours. If you play multiplayer, you will get owned.
If you play more than 1.5 hours u will get dizzy.

So I finally got to try the Oculus Rift and I have to say it completely blew my mind.

Admittedly the screen is low res and the screen door effect is noticeable but these struck me as minor technical issues that will be easily sorted out in the coming year(s).
What blew my mind was the immersion - it is utterly incredible. Looking around your virtual environment is indescribable and has to be tried to really grasp how immersive it is.
In real life I'm scared of heights and in the Rift I'm also scared of heights. I had trouble standing up when I tried the roller coaster demo and felt cramped when piloting a small moon lander.

I did suffer motion sickness (which I've never suffered before in real life) so hopefully there will be a solution to combat the sick feeling.

In short the Rift is the most incredible piece of technology I've ever experienced and I can see VR having both a positive and negative impact on society in the coming years.

If you haven't tried it I recommend giving it a blast. I can't wait for the commercial launch.

Sounds like something I'll have to avoid - I haven't found a first-person-shooter yet that doesn't give me a headache after 5 minutes and make me want to throw up after 10.

If you're not normally motion-sick, then that thing will probably kill me :-)

I am prone to motion sickness, and I can easily trigger it with the Oculus Rift by changing the orientation of my virtual head with mouse and keyboard slightly too fast. By some human vision system magic I have no problem when looking at a monitor, but looking through the Oculus Rift can feel like my eyes are being ripped out when rotating too fast. Just looking around using the headtracker isn't a problem for me.

One thing I realized is that the view rotation speed in a typical FPS game is a number of times faster than you can comfortably or safely do in real life by moving your head. It's like you have to relearn how to move around a virtual 3D environment after years of WASD+mouse.
