I'm sitting at work with my copy sitting taunting me, I'm not going to have time to play it this weekend anyway which sounds like i'm lucky. If you look on steam's site they say it won't unlock until 23 August 12:01 CET which is 21 hours away so I hope you didn't specifically take today off to play Saints Row.

Well I did but one of my staff called in sick, but I banished my wife and kids from the house tonight so I could play uninterrupted and now I'll have nothing to do. I am NOT happy.

Yeah I pre-ordered on Steam (well actually amazon but got steam key) and the steam page said 20th for release so assumed the 21st our time them when I went back a few days later when I got the pre-order code it was changed to 23rd.
So I'm guessing Deep Silver are to blame and maybe it has something to do with the aussie classification issues.

edit missed CET was ion US time

As far as I'm aware the non-US release for it was delayed a couple days from 20th to 23rd, but that was done a while back. Not sure why, probably some big retail partners complained or something.

It's been a  while since I've purchased a PC game, or any game for that matter, I thought Steam was an online portal to buy and play, why do you need Steam if you already bought the disc someplace else?

A large number of games now require you to use steam, origin, games for windows live / etc even if you purchase them "offline"

A decent number of PC games require Steamworks to function at all - the disk itself just loads the content instead of downloading it.

That all sounds rather annoying and irratating. You have the disc yet you can't play. I wouldn't be a happy camper either. So what happens if Steam goes offline or has a server crash,  are you able to still play or is it an "online-all-the-time" sort of deal?

Varies highly from game to game.. In general yes you can still play

Ok steam have tied the NZ and AUS release dates together by mistake and are working to rectify it apparently. No eta for a fix.

Sorry to go off topic, but this is intriguing. So most games on PC you can't re-sell anymore? Or can you deactivate and then sell?

To the OP, I hope they get it sorted soon, that sounds really unprofessional of them.

Given AU got delayed until next month I hope so.

Re: issues with download services - Steam offers me enough benefits I don't care. I can download my library anywhere and I normally purchase games at ridiculously low prices during sales (most expensive Steam game in the last 12 months was Far Cry 3 @ NZ$30 or so?).

I have no want to sell or trade because I buy them so cheap. Would be nice to share with others (like borrow/lend) but whatever.

I have no use for physical media any more - tossed all my CDs (apart from collector's edition WC3 and CoH).

One reason I doubt I could ever be a console gamer is the lack of a Steam equivalent - I am happy to wait 6-12 months and buy a game for 10-20 bucks, only games I pay full price for are Blizzard (SC2, D3) and up until recently Hitman (love the series, Absolution was terrible).

Sorry - to answer your question no, no resale possible (unless you sell your Steam account which is against ToS)

It depends, if the game uses steamworks then the disc is just a install, the online match making, achievements, friends system etc etc require the steam platform. Usually it's clear on the box that steam is required.

Not all games use steamworks, Blizzard and EA have their own digital platforms. Games like Minecraft are still independently distributed.

Anyway Steam has an offline mode, depending on the game you can play single player only games offline no problem.

The steam platform service is generally is far more reliable than when developers or publishers run servers themselves.
