I have tried turning my PS3 on today and all It will not start up. Just comes up with the red error screen, I have done a bit of go-ogling and there's lots of conflicting remedies!  Does it mean its bricked or is there a repair.

Send back if under warranty is usually the best thing to do.
If not under warranty, well, home repair or paying someone experienced to repair can be a good idea, else return to base repair.

EDIT:  just saw this note somewhere.

Hold the power button passed the two beeps until you get another.
Boot the recovery menu and tell it to fix it.

So, get the PS3 onto standby (off with red light), then press and hold the power button, wait for 2 beeps, keep holding until you hear another beep.  It should go into a repair/recovery screen.

The recovery menu was removed wasn't it as it was what people were using to softmod their PS3's?

At any rate, good odds it's a failed Hard disk, you can either take it in under warranty, or buy a new 2.5" SATA hard-drive and plug it in.

Doesn't hurt to try the recovery menu though, tell it to "Repair database" if it does in fact come up.
