Hello fellow gamers.

I currently play a geo-locational augmented reality game based on Google Maps called Ingress.
The requirement to play this is an Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S3 type specs required)

The game play consists of establishing "portals" at places of public art, landmarks, historical buildings... public parks etc... (these portals are created yourself by taking a picture, and if accepted they become a permanent game fixture) You then link these Portals to create virtual triangular fields over geographic areas. This field gives you Mind units points... Progress in the game is measured by the number of Mind Units mainly (people)... but there are many other strange and wonderful stats involved. The necessary links between portals may range from meters to kilometers, or to hundreds of kilometers in operations of considerable logistical complexity... so there are large communities and lots of tactical interaction between agents in different cities.

The benefits I have found from playing this game can be summed up in 3 main points:

1. You get outside and game. You get some exercise. Its fun and addictive. Gaming with health benefits who would've thought?...

2. You interact socially with people. When I first started my friend was showing me how to play. We were at a Portal and he goes... "hey that guys playing ingress lets go chat to him". Of course i didn't want to... but we did.. and hes now a very good mate of mine. In fact i ended up at his wedding party. You basically randomly bump into people playing it... you don't go out to socialize but it happens nevertheless. Currently in my town we have a great community for both the Blue and the Green team. We meet up about once a week for a drink. There are people from all races, cultures, ages, genders...etc... people you would never usually talk to... as they may not be in your social niche... the funny thing is you start talking about ingress as its something your all interested in, but after a while you go off topic and learn a bit about the person your talking to. Its made me realise there are a-lot of good people in the world, and all ya need is a bit of time to get to know them.

3. You get to many sights you never even knew existed in your town, country or world. Early on in the game I was walking home playing ingress and i noticed a portal just off the route i walked everyday. I went to investigate and found a crazy Japanese garden with waterfalls etc... the funny thing is I had walked past it hundreds of time and never knew it existed. Since playing ingress I have seen many many landmarks, historical buildings and monuments i never knew anything about and often passed with out a moments notice. Now I know about most of the landmarks and know some history about them... I've climbed all the highest peaks in town for this game and enjoyed the view. Also if you go overseas you could just say in the comms. "Hi i'm new to town... could anyone recommend a good hotel" Its highly likely someone will offer you a place to stay and show you around... If your playing this game you will see all the interesting sights you might have otherwise missed and get some insight into the place your visiting.

Anyway that was my Spiel on the game in the hope that some people on this gaming community might be interested and find this to be their type of game.

The Reason i post this is that I Play for the blue team.

We really need some more players to play for us in Auckland as the Green team have the upper hand. Blue is certainly picking up its game but Green still holds sway.
So in order to recruit I hoped maybe posting on a gamers forums would help

So anyone up for it?

Viva La Resistance!

Chookz.

Agree with all of the above, except that you should become Enlightened.

I walk about 30km/month on a quiet month playing. You find some cool stuff around.

Not sure about resistance - but Enlightened have a really active community and some great people running it (Josiah Spackman is one). There are regular events that are usually followed with dinner somewhere.

Also playable on tethered tablets - I use my Nexus 7.

Yup fairs fair. The Enlightened are well established in Auckland. Hence the request for anyone interested to join the Blue team and current underdogs in Auckland... Helps us build our Auckland base.

If You were in Wellington i'd recommend you join the enlightened as they could do with some more players. But ofc you would be warmly welcomed to the resistance here and we have a great community.

Thanks for reading.

I'm in Devonport, Auckland.

Just started playing for the Resistance on Saturday. I'm soooo hooked.

I'm playing on my daughter's old android phone, but I'm keen for the iOS version as I think an iPad's battery may be better.

I've done 15-20km on my bike so yeah +1 on the exercise!

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.
