You can buy the 120GB hard drive and it will work on the original core Xbox360 systems ($230)
The Xbox360 Elite was rumored to come late July, looks like its August 23rd now (You can pre order for $849 on gpstore.co.nz)

I have a 360 at the moment and have had no issues with overheating, and it sits near a lot of electrical gear in a poor ventilated area.
A few of my friends had the original model that came out (with the Hitachi drives) and they have had issues with the DVD drives, however Microsoft has replaced all of them with the Toshiba-Samsung drives (which are in models made after November last year) and have had no issues since then.

I believe Microsoft just extended all 360 warranties to be 3 years instead of 1 which is an added bonus.

Personally, I'd suggest against buying a 360 until they have fixed the hardware issues.  Read online, you'll see lots of people who have 3 or 4 replacement machines.  The highest I've read is 12.  This will be an issue that will last a long time, I think.  Plus, Microsoft staff have repeatedly lied about the issues and only a month ago said it was 3-5% fault rate.

Hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the year. The 3 year warranty is just for the 'red ring of death', a standard warranty applies just for other faults.

the Xbox 360 fault (that Forza 2 often brings out) is a design fault. "X-clamps" are what people are calling this, you can re-fit the heatsink with less torque to avoid the problem in the meanwhile but essentially, XBox 360's sold *today* are faulty. I'd wait for a new hardware revision, or take that 3-year warranty.

I'm most impressed by the PS3, you can change the hard disk on that yourself, it is just a 2.5" SATA laptop hard disk. Instructions are printed in the manual. Not as many games for the PS3 yet tho.

Blah!  Don't buy a console untill christmas....Trust me...65nm xbox 360 processors will be way better and make the console crash much less, and hopefully there will be a price drop in the ps3 so there will be more of a choice...

I checked with EB and voiced my concern regarding XBox 360's 33% failure rate in UK, and they seem to suggest that those are most likely from the launch version.

I took it as a grain of salt, and will wait for Elite version to come out. Even though MS has more than a year with Xbox 360, it is safer and wiser to wait a bit longer for 65nm chip and wait and see what Xmas is bringing. At the moment I'm happy with Wii. so if you want a quick gaming that doesn't burn your pocket/wallet, Wii is pretty good in my book. We actually enjoy having it more. The games in NZ are a bit on the low side, but compare to PS3, it has more games and much for fun. Depending on what sort of gamer you are too.

We/I am planning to get Xbox 360 Elite when it is 65nm, mainly for XBLA gaming and a few XBox 360 only games.

Xbox 360 elite is like Xbox 360, the difference is it has HDMI added and is in black colour. All other "elite" accessories are already available, in black.

PS3 should come down on price this week by 200 bucks (I hope)...

Wait til E3 is finished, and decide on the games that are going to be available

So sad. Microsoft's E3 presentation ended with a whimper.
They showed a Halo 3 themed Xbox 360 and accessories, said "thank you" and finished up with a preview of the game.

Just as bad... Sony bring Chewbacca on stage with a Star Wars themed PSP - a slimmed down version of the handheld gaming device.
