I read on the Inquirer site that Ubisoft are releasing some older classics for free on Fileplanet, using in-game advertising. Sounds interesting... I can definitely recommend Far Cry as a cool game but no idea yet how much advertising there is. Still, I'll install it on some upcoming PC builds to get some feedback. Linkage:

I should add that you need to create a (free) account with Fileplanet to download anything there. I had a logon already from when I started playing BF2, as far as I can tell you don't need to subscribe to a paid service at all.

Hi lurker,

Have you installed and played them at all yet?

I'm just curious about what - if any, gotchas there might be.

The first gotcha is that apparently it's for US folks only. I accidentally made a mistake during the registration process and ended up ticking the US box instead of NZ. Anyway, I have played Far Cry and Rayman so far and the advertising consists of logos on loading screens/menus and animated ads between levels etc. I found it more intrusive on Rayman as some of the levels are pretty quick so you spend more time watching the ads. Far Cry isn't too bad. So far, it seems the ads do not intrude during gameplay - just level loads & menus so far.

I'm not sure if the game will insist on downloading new ads at regular intervals.
