Hi guys,

Does anyone want to join me in a game-swop syndicate.

We can use a new website I just found online called www.groopme.co.nz to control the syndicate.

Let me know.

Cheers

It looks like, you all make/join a syndicate and you all put your money towards what you want to buy?

So noone ever owns something outright? You all share ownership?

Are you tired of playing the same old computer or console games over and over again. Well why not create a syndicate and swop games with other people. Once you have played all the games in the syndicate then each member goes out and buys another game and the swop process starts all over again. Just remember, it is illegal to copy games.

This doesn't sound particularly kosher.  NZ copyright law does allow some leeway with software (i.e. creating a backup for yourself) unless expressly forbidden by the game licence, and I can't see the studios allowing this.  For example, look at the lengths (and subsequent mess) that the distributors of Bioshock (PC version) went to trying to prevent this sort of thing.

Pooling money to buys games is one option for a game-swop syndicate.

My thoughts were more around each one contributes what they already have to a pool.

Each member contributes a different game and then we all pick one we have not played before.

We keep swopping out until we have all played all the games.

Then we can go out and each buy a new one and pool that and the cycle continues.

A much cheaper way of playing multiple games. No piracy and perfectly legal !!!

I only have PC games but anyone who wants to start an Xbox, PS2/3 or Wii syndicate can do that as well.

Cool idea, yes?

Sorry but I doubt that this is perfectly legal.

I am sure that a lot of the games will have a licence on them saying that you cannot lend your game to friends etc.

Also most of the games have CD-Keys that once registered online you will only be able to do this once. IE your syndicate members will go to register so that they can play the game, or use it online and it will come back saying the CD-Key has already been used.

Potentially you could loose your licence as well, so you would no longer be able to play the game online for example.

(is there an echo? Tongue out)  Any restrictions like these would most likely be hidden in the legalese around distribution, although DVDs often explicitly mention "open domain" restrictions so I'd easily assume game licencing to be similar.

Looking at some EULA's...

You are permitted to:
(a) load the Software Product into and use it on a single computer which is under your custody and control and which meets the specifications referred to in the manual for your own private and domestic use;
(b) transfer the Software from one computer to another provided it is used on only one computer at any one time and any computer on which it is used is under your custody and control at the time of use;
(c) transfer the Software Product (complete with all documentation) and the benefit of this EULA to another person provided such person has agreed to accept the terms of this EULA and you contemporaneously transfer any permitted copies of the Software Product you may have made to that person or destroy all copies not transferred. If any transferee does not accept such terms then this EULA shall automatically terminate.
You are entitled to use the Program for your own use, but you are not entitled to: sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Program to other parties in any way, nor to rent, lease or license the Program to others without the Licensors prior written consent
You may permanently transfer all your rights under this EULA, provided you retain no copies, you transfer all of the Software (including all component parts, the media and printed materials and any upgrades) and the recipient reads and accepts this EULA... You may not copy, rent, lease, sublicense, distribute, publicly display the Software, create derivative works based on the Software (except to the extent expressly permitted in the Editor and End-User Variation section of this Agreement or other documentation accompanying the Software) or otherwise commercially exploit the Software.

I'm guessing very fine line involved here, and highly dependent on both the development studio and the distributors.

No its not an echo, its a parrot Tongue out

I guess as long as everyone is DELETING or uninstalling (that includes saved game files), then it may well be legal.

This is almost certainly against the terms of use of the games involved. Besides which, it's a little lame isn't it? I can only assume it's being organised by youngins who can't afford their own games - a view which is somewhat supported by the constant use of the word 'swop'.

In any case, most of the best games these days aren't compatible with this system - anythign distributed by Valve, and multiplayer games, and an increasing number of single player games like Bioshock.
