I've had an email from Sony telling me I have been credited five days free PSN Plus membership because of the troubles of Christmas.  I know there will be h8ers but I think that's nice of them.

I no longer have Xbox Gold membership, so I don't expected to see anything similar from Microsoft in my mailbox.  Does anyone know if they have done anything similar?

Why would they?  Xbox Live was only down intermittently, as Microsoft has invested significantly in infrastructure for their service.  Whenever it failed, you could generally just wait a couple hours and try again.

Umm they were down enough for Kim DotCom to use his mega site to bribe them to stop attacking so he could play Xbox.

I had about a two day period where I had an you must update \ can't download problem on my xbox 360.  So I think your guess of a couple of hours is off.
