Hi,

After spending way too much time playing counter-strike, I'm looking for a decent military style FPS. I've played COD, COD2, FEAR, Rainbow Sis Vegas. So something along those lines.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers.

If you love playing online then Americas Army is an awsome game that I have just started playing.

I am playing 2.5.0, thought the latest is 2.8.2 (I downloaded the old version).

Not sure what platform you're playing on, but did you get any gametime on the COD4 multiplayer beta on xbox 360?

Ranking system with customisable classes and perks that you unlock for increased health, stamina, stopping power etc. Gameplay is great, graphics are excellent....cant say enough about it really... lol

Beta has just finished but the two weeks I managed to get in got me totally hooked to the point where I've barely touched the copy of Halo 3 I got on launch day. I'll probably give Halo a go now, but thats more just to kill time while I wait for the retail release of COD4

Hi.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm playing on PC. More of a single player type gamer, but I do enjoy a bit of online. Just get totally @%&ked off by all the cheats available, all I really want is a good clean level playing field.

BF2 is multiplayer only isn't it?

I do recommend America's Army.

Although it is totally online, cheating is very rare as most servers are 'punkbuster' compliant.

So as long as you play on 'punkbuster' protected servers then you will not get any cheaters. Also most server admins are pretty good at banning cheaters.

Technically, it has a single-player but the AI is terrible (good target practice but no challenge). Most people use BF2 exclusively for online multi-player.

I'm an avid Counter Strike Source & BF2 player. Firstly, there are *way* more cheaters on CSS than BF2 (I only play on VAC & Punkbuster enabled servers). Basically, VAC sucks but PB seems to do the job. Also, YMMV, but there seems to be a lot less cheating on NZ/AUS based CSS servers.

PB ain't all that.

Before moving back to NZ I used to admin a BF2 server (still do occasionally... although the ping is absurd). PB gets all the known hackers out there but doesn't do much for new hacks, private hacks (becoming more popular) or variations. Usually if a public hack became available it'd take 3-4 days before it was detected by PB which would invaribly annoy the crap out of regular players on our server. Private hacks generally aren't detected and thats were admin have to jump in and try and figure out if they're cheating through screenshots etc (lots of fun wasting time doing that... not)

In nz it's probably not too bad since we're fairly isolated and no one outside of NZ wants to use our servers due to the ping. Also with nz players if you got caught cheating chances are you'd be hung drawn and quartered.

Personally I'd hold out until COD4 comes out on PC (not long to go)  Although its got a strong MP side, being COD I'm sure the single player component will still be really good.

Hey, I've always wondered how admins on BF2 spot hackers. With CSS it's easy, mostly due to the camera modes if you've died/are spectating. Do BF2 admins have a similar viewing mode? I can't see how screenshots can prove hacking unless the culprit is obviously glitching. Score isn't really a good indicator - I've seen awesome players with ridiculous scores that I know aren't hacking.

Do you guys use BattleRecorder or similar? Even then it must be difficult to distinguish shots made by an 'aimbot' or a genuinely good player, a radar hack or an experienced player with intimate knowledge of the map etc.

with a CS, COD background

I suggest waiting until COD4 is released in pc. the demo is only sp at the moment. COD4 promises to be close to BF2 SF

AA is a really good game with a much higher degree of realism.

BF2 was great but its on the wane.

ETQW's looks like a good scrim game but crap for pub play. too many estars worried about stats.

crysis ..duno..to scifi for me.

TF2 loads of fun - like the incredibles with weps

UT3 looking promising but still in demo.

BF2 cheats. imo loads more in CS based on the grief levels I saw the admin teams going through.

BF2 pb was ok for 80% of the nub hax. interesting comment about NZ being so far away for all the real cheats. one of the best hax writers who wrote and sold cheats at MPC was a kiwi. exposed none the less and took a whole clan of legit players down with him.

the best way to catch a bf2 cheat is take a screen shots of all the players screens and visual check each one retrospectively.

by automating that at the server and posting the images to a file server for storage - the records are linked to the PUID and then you have to wait for them to pop up again for a local ban or send the file straight into EA/Evenbalance for a global hardware ban.

BF2 can play in windowed mode and in that case a ss renders a black screen. its a damn good bet thats a positive hit as well.

You could also try Armed Assault. I haven't played it but I've played Operation Flashpoint and thought that was pretty good and Armed Assault is supposed to be a bit better. If you want a bit more realism then I'd say that but it can get frustrating. You can also drive tanks and fly planes/helis etc.

COD4 looks amazing so definately wait out for that and if you want some WW2 action you could always try to get your hands on COD1 & 2.

BF2 is another good modern one but like other people have said, the SP is pretty rubbish. There are some good mods for it though that improve it. Haven't played it in a while so I don't know if there are still many online servers for it in NZ.

Really? which clan was that? I can't say I remember too many nz bf clans, but I imagine a lot of legit players migrated from bf1942 which I used to play heaps here in nz before heading overseas.

Wow! ramzi rings a vague bell, but Imperium I remember well. Actually weren't some of the admin for nzbattlefield.com part of that clan?
