as per topic? I'm tempted to get a 4k monitor. or should I get a 2560x1440 instead?

Depends on your pc specs if you want to use it for gaming 4k requires a fair amount of grunt.

Personally I will look at one this year but only because of the amount of real estate it can give me

Just upgraded to a 4K monitor - purely for work - the screen real estate is incredible. took a week or so for my eyes to get used to the small font but it is great to work with.

I tried one, it needed scaling turned on in windows to make the UI elements easy to aim for, and that screws up so many apps. Like photoshop. Sticking with my small screens for now, will look into it again when a larger 4k is reasonable so I can run it without scaling at a sane distance from them.

4k monitors are very expensive and are hard to drive - and where is the 4k content?

I've just bought two BenQ monitors, both 2560x1440 - 27" and 32".
Great image, and not too big (when I bought the 27" I got used to it in a few hours - now I prefer the 32".)
My old Dell "high res" 24" monitor seems tiny and fuzzy by comparison.
These monitors will run off most mid-range graphics cards, or even without a graphic card on a modern PC.

At a guess: I'd choose ultrawide 21:9 1440p over a 16:9 4k ... there is no 4k content and your gpu is not gonna be fast enough for 4k gaming.

I bought 2 of these a couple of months ago for $574 each and have been very happy with them, Downside is that although I don't game very much at all in the last few years they not so slowly killing my single 7970

I might give it another shot at 32", but 28 was not big enough for 4k with no scaling with my eyesight. in saying that, the 40" isnt badly priced. Would like to move to a single big screen instead of multiple smaller ones since that would allow for better workspace management.

Really depends on your use-case scenarios.

For most people I would say get a high quality 1440p panel (as a GTX 980 owner the upcoming QHD monitor from Acer looks awesome - IPS, 1ms, 144Hz, G-Sync).

For myself I will be jumping to 4K with G-Sync when I get a monitor upgrade. I do a lot of gaming with Dolphin, which will run perfectly at 4K on my system (i4790K @ 4.6, 16GB RAM, EVGA SC ACX 2.0 GTX 980). I'm also grabbing a GH4 soon, so my own footage and workflow is helped there too. Later in the year will grab a second 980, that will let me push 4K nicely at high settings with G-Sync (up to 60fps of course). So for me I have plenty to do with 4K.

I just got an Achieva Shimian and very happy with it. A huge upgrade from my 24 inch dell; I was running dual 24 inch, now a 27 + 24. I'd say dual 27 inch 1440p would be a real sweet spot at the moment.

I got it second hand, and it was originally from ebay, so a lot cheaper than the one above. Also not overclocked - interesting they're selling overclocked ones since I was under the impression they were a bit hard to get\hit and miss these days.
