Oh bummer, that's a lot of servers gone. So, how many game servers will Geekzone be running in the future? ;) Where's the praying emoticon where you need one!

well operationally you need servers and a big pipe.

you need a popular game to host

you need some volunteer admins to keep cheats and nubs out

you need a reasonable forum for the players to chat

there a lot more to it but those are the basic's.

baby steps.

then when you get to the scale of xtra or iconz - you need to leverage online sale channels, passive advertising - in game script editing rendering sponsored ads, contra's with lan events blah blah blah.

So will tomorrow be okay then?

There's already a few good NZ game servers, go look at www.gamers.net.nz and their forums

there are quite a lot. My unofficial rankings of NZ online gaming communities

Iconzareana would now come in at 1st position. most public servers/most ranked

gamers.net.nz I would rate at number 2. sorry Spig. less ranked servers than iconz.

gameplanet used to be the bizzle but really they have been off the boil for ages - so they make number 3 this week.

recoil - sadly only CS servers but a loyal player base and from an outside pov run well. specialists. number 4

acsonline - number 5. a mix of pub servers but none ranked. the one redeeming feature was that they offered a free public bookng server where a clan could book a private session for a match or training. last I heard it was on the blink but if DirtyApe got that going again I think their unofficial standing would rise to number 3.

lastly treshna in slot 6.  lots of good ideals but a little slow to actually be effective. sorry D.

and where was Xtra? well by default they offered ranked, bookable servers on large scale. so probably 1 on size and scale.

selling to Mammoth was the mistake

My personal experience of the Xtra servers (specifically Counter-Strike Source) was that they were usually quite empty and often had quite high ping times, which I always thought to be odd, considering I'm using an Xtra connection.
