I'm still not sure I'll be upgrading my xbox 360 any time soon, but this is certainly an interesting development given they said it wasn't for quite a while:

That is cool, it would certainly make me reconsider the choice between XB1 and PS4. I was leaning towards PS4 if I had to buy games again anyway, but I would definitely go XB1 just so I could play through all the fallout games on one console.

Dont really want to fill my XB1 up with 360 games when I have a 360 too.

Dont think this is a big deal other than MS being able to brag about # of titles it will run.

It's not really backwards compatible, putting a disk in will download a Xbox One compatible version and only will work with a limited number of titles

It's not like when the original PS3 had the PS2 chip inside, or a NDS that lets you play DS games natively.

I have a bunch of xbox 360 on demand games, i think its pretty cool.   Would be cooler if the games worked on windows 10 though :P

Certainly of interest to me. My son is 10 and I love playing Halo, Destiny, Sniper and a few other games with him downstairs in the family room and me in the office area on the X360. The thought of upgrading to two XBox 1's was bad enough, but the thought of having to invest again in replacement games x2 was just beyond our reach.

As a side note, I am always left chuckling when he and his mates "thrash the noob". I can fly an aircraft but I can't master an XBox game. Sad aye?

More details here:

www.anandtech.com/show/9382/xbox-at-e3-new-controller-game-emulation-and-plenty-of-exclusives

This seems to imply it's based on emulation, and you won't necessarily have to download xbox one versions of the games, at least that's how I read it - More you pop the DVD in and it will copy files from there as needed.  Not that I would mind either way...

Oh that's not so bad then!  Surprising that the performance of software emulation would be up to the task...I could only dream of the 360 games being upscaled to 1080P

It already does that tho, and if not and its outputting 720 then your screen is doing the upscaling.

I am more interested in if it would be able to render things at 1080, or hopefully when they get their act together at higher resolutions. Also framerate. Would be nice to not have that 30FPS BS that passes for output on consoles. If it could emulate the 360 fast enough that it got 60. That would make it worth it.

But playing experiance exactly the same as a physical 360 - not interesting.

wonder if they will work on windows 10 with that streaming to windows 10 thing theyre workign on, i assume they would.

hopefully they put every game available up for sale digitally.  I have mass effect 1 on demand I think, but i know you couldnt buy 2 and 3 on demand due to their size.  rather have no discs.

According to Phil Spencer yes, streaming will work; basically all current Xbox One features will work ('Xbox record that' etc.) but not every Xbox 360 Game will work. The 1.5 hour live update for today's announcements detailed a few things about why not every game would work; games requiring some legacy peripherals, licencing issues, popularity.
There's an ongoing emulation/testing effort. About 100 games available to preview members (lucky me), about another 100 upon public availability, growing from that point onwards. You can even vote which 360 games you want.

So they have written a PowerPC Emulator for the XBox One - which runs on mid-range x86 hardware, running a modified Windows 8 OS....

Would be possible to run it on Windows then wouldn't it?

Also - while the game may be output at 720p/1080p, you're not getting a free HD remaster, all the content, textures etc will still be in source res. Low Res textures in 1080p look gaaaarbage.

Still cool though.
