This 40inch LED is going for $399 at The Warehouse.

I just noticed it has a response time of 17ms - will this still be ok for gaming?

What sort of gaming, console or PC? I play PS4 on our Sony rear projection FHD TV of 8+ years old. lol...

Not that I know much about that particular one, but at that price I wouldn't expect much.

Oh and if it's for PC gaming I wouldn't bother (unless it's for some sort of steam big picture type setup) TVs just aren't designed to replace a PC monitor.

I wouldn't pay much attention to that advertised response time. It's one of those specs that manufacturers are notoriously "creative" with in their specs and advertising.

Should be fine for gaming. Even the bottom end TVs are giving quite respectable pictures now, and without much picture processing on them there isnt anything you need to turn off with a game mode like on the better TVs with motionplus/flow/whatever effects.

I have a 2013 Panasonic Plasma which had its comparatively high input lag listed as it's main negative (around 30ms when using game mode). I'm a keen console gamer and haven't noticed any issues with it with either my PS3 or PS4.

When i purchased my first big screen tv back back probably 10 to 12 years ago, i purchased a plasma 40 inch. The lag was so bad you could not game. If i moved a characters fwd, it would take literally half a second to move. It was so laggy i had to manually delay audio out of the surround sound system or it would be out of sync.

I returned it and purchased a 40inch LCD at the time - that worked fine.

I think you should be OK. As I said, my TV was generally lambasted as being no good for gaming due to its comparatively high input lag. But I've not had any issues with it at all. If there is lag, its much faster than I'm able to perceive.

Some plasmas have terrible lag as they need to plan ahead to turn the pixel on.

If your console gaming then 30 hz isn't going to push displays very hard anyway ;)
