Any fans?

Want to talk about any current, old or upcoming games?

We are in the middle of a come back for the genre. Pillars of eternity, dragon age, shadowrun returns, shadows heretic kingdoms (well thats action rpg), the south park rpgs, the upcoming Sword Coast Legends, or Torment: Tides?

I loved pillars of eternity, apparently there is an expansion coming. Looking forward to torment a fair bit.

Isometric?
Action?

There must be someone here with a love of the niche. Hundred of thousands of kickstarter backers, and I imagine mostly the types of hardcore geek gamers on here.

I am mostly confused what style of RPG you're after, I wouldn't say Dragon Age is a top-down RPG, and many of the others you've listed are just click-fests ;)

Pillars of eternity looks cool but I haven't got around to playing it, too many games not enough time these days. I have so many unplayed games in my steam queue.

South park, and shadows heretic kingdoms are action RPGS, but none of the others are.

Top down, means you primarily look from above, as opposed to third person, or first. Its the preferred perspective for classic RPGs, and RTS games. Dragon age you can look from third person, but its a less than useful angle.

Although dragon age is quite limited in some respects next to shadowrun or pillars. Limited character options, voice acting descriptions, action oriented rather than plot or atmosophere oriented. In fact aside from the excellent dialogue tree system, I'd be tempted to call it an action rpg.

A 'real' rpg, has an involved plot, dialogue, interesting and compelling characters, decisions that impact the game - its like a book. And the combats are very strategic, to the point they have to be pause, played slowly, because the combat is so difficult without that planning.

In that respect a 'real' rpg is nothing like a clickfest. But I am not sure I would describe DA, or southpark as 'real' rpgs in that sense, even though they both have interesting stories, because so combat oriented, and the combats are not that hard/strategic.

But basically I meant any form of RPG, action or conventional/classic, that has primarily a view from above ie 'top down'. They are sort of experiencing a major comeback right now.

That last two I mentioned is are a classic forgotten realms, ala neverwinter/baldurs, and the last one is the spiritual successor to planescape torment.

Another one I played awhile ago was divinity original sin - thats turn by turn combat and has some of the most interesting and stragetic combat I have seen. Plot is interesting and quirky too.

There are things I loved about it. It's overall a great game. Needs a fair bit of play time admitedly.

It is lacking in a decent party AI, which means because a lot of the combats are hard, there is micromanaging.

And the classes have been so power balanced some of them are a bit samey (not as bad as dragon age though, lol).

The art is actually kind of amazing. And the characters are amusing, and compelling - the plot is a great story. It has all the elements of a classic RPG.

I enjoyed it anyway.
