I bought a second hand XBox 360 for the kids for Christmas and have a selection of Kinect games suitable for them but I wanted to maybe get a few games for me to play on the odd occasion with friends. (I'm 43 for what it's worth)

If I was to choose only say 6 games then what should they be?

I liked playing Doom when I was younger so a first person shooter, guessing Halo but which one(s) and maybe Gears of War?

Love football so again guessing one of the FIFA ones but which?

I'd really like a game where you can fly an X-Wing fighter / spacecraft or some other space themed game (I've read that most of the Star Wars ones are pretty average)

Any recommendations appreciated, think of it like a "Desert Island Games" where you can only take a couple of epic titles!

Gears is fun. If you like RPGs then take a look at Mass Effect or Lost Odyssey (they're completely different styles). I also enjoyed Darksiders, Dark Souls, Star Ocean, Resonance of Fate... but bear in mind that I'm rather RPG-focussed :)

I was going to suggest Mass Effect 2. Then maybe something that can do 2 player, maybe street fighter or something?  My kids love both skylanders and the lego games. The lego games are actually really fun (and skylanders is a guilty pleasure too ;-) )

What ages are they? No point mentioning GTA if they are 8 years old.

I don't think my post was well worded, I'm looking for me (a 43 year old male) just to get a few games to play 'after hours' when the kids are in bed!

Post edited to hopefully make more sense

Yeah sorry I did get that;  my suggestions were for an adult, and I was pointing out that some "kids" games are also really fun for adults too - like the lego games have so many jokes about the movies, etc that you would only get as an adult  :)

I do believe that Call Of Duty is one of the most popular FPS games.

If you're after a driving game I can highly recommend the Forza series.

if you are after something to let of steam after putting up with the muppets on the road then you have to look at the Burnout driving games . Pure fun.

+1 Gears Trilogy (even the 4th one is good albeit short).

Also, BTW, if your Xbox has a hard drive paying for Xbox Live Gold gets you two free games a month for $10 (or is it $12?).

They've had many great games including Gears 1 & 3 on offer.

I'd suggest doing it that way if you are a casual gamer.

Edit: Live Gold also gets you online multi player which makes Gears (and other games) even more fun. I played the 2nd Gear campaign with friends in Oz.
