Just thought I'd post an update to this thread: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=64&TopicId=16648

I found that my WiFi connection was running thru BOTH Windows Zero Config utility and the Asus WIFI Control centre. Weird. I disabled Windows, and ping times dropped from about 1.5secs to about .7secs. So I enabled the windows settiings and disabled the Asus controls. Ping times are now normally in the .08 to .23 range for most CS:S servers in the south pacific. Yay!

Now to work out how to set up port forwarding and I'll be set

port forwarding is a breeze. simply google port forward and the specific name of your router and you should be able to find detailed walkthroughs of how to do it. alternatively go here.
