Hi
I am moving to a remote part of NZ and wondered if anyone had gaming experiance with ipstar sattelite internet
is the latency (ping) good enuf to game with
what providers have the best deals
any information at all would be awesome

I don't think you can expect good gaming with Satellite Internet services, they have a lower bandwidth than ADSL and have high latency.
Beaming up signals to the satellite station and having them shoot down to your tiny little dish does take time, so latency is a problem.
Upload is usually provided via your existing phone line, which would provide 56kbps max. upload anyway.

i agree with manhinli, there is no way satellite internet will be good for gaming. latency would be terrible. though it does somewhat depend on what games you'll be playing as some will handle that latency better than others, like older games with less info to send. what games do you play?

I will be primarily using the connection for poker which im sure should run ok but i was wondering how FPS like ET or Counterstrike type games would ping the system is run with out phoneline so uses the dish for upload also not phoneline.

it'll run poker no sweat. cs will run but it will likely have very bad latency so will lag badly. most FPS will probably not run very well.

do you play counterstrike or counterstrike:source?

No, with ipstar its a 2-way satellite service.

pings are probably 700ms+

I know nothing about ipstar, but I said that satellite internet was 'usually' installed with a modem line uplink.

IPStar does not make for a pleasant online FPS experience - You would be better of looking at wireless. Dialup would normally be lower latency than an IP star connection (depending on what your sending and bandwidth of each option vs serialization delay), certainly for most FPS unless your getting very poor dialup connection speeds.
