Ok, i bought Minecraft Windows 10 edition Beta for PC, and have a few questions

And yes i have googled it but either there are differences between the console versions and the PC versions or I am missing something basic

1) how do i get separate usernames for my Kids, do i have to purchase multiple versions of the game for each Kid?

2) Can they play splitscreen on a PC without having to use some hacky type thing?

3) What exactly is the objective of minecraft, I don't get it at all

There were more but now I am writing it down i can't think of them

1) Not sure, will try on mine :)

2) No split screen unfortunately.

3) To get to the Nether and beat the dragon - nut takes a lot of mining and producing of various elements and equipment to get there.

Its a neat game once you sit down with it, my 8yr old knows way more about it than me and shows me how to do stuff :)

The Win 10 version however dosent allow for server play at the moment, which is a bugger because thats where it really shines with multiplayer.

You could check if youre eligible for the standard version as well....... I had the standard and got the Win 10 version as well, so I can switch between them.

  1. Yes, Minecraft is like pretty much any other online game, World of Warcraft, Battlefield, Call of Duty etc. One purchase = one account.
  2. No, you need a separate laptop/PC, and separate account for each person playing simultaneously.
  3. It doesn't have one, it's an open world sandbox.

*edit* my answers apply to "Normal" Minecraft, not the Windows 10 beta.

EDIT **** Sorry this was written about normal minecraft - I did not know about the new version. However I suspect most of it still applies. ****
But I highly recommend std minecraft - my 7 yr started playing at 6 and my 11 yr old is still enjoying the game after 2+ years.

1) how do i get separate usernames for my Kids, do i have to purchase multiple versions of the game for each Kid?

I believe the PC version allows free unlicensed single player.
Each kid can have their own user name and own password.
It is one person per PC but they could either have there own worlds to build on, or take turns logging into the same world - but it will be saved on only one PC and be one at a time.
If they want to play together they will need their own licence each and a machine each.
Then either you run a server on a local machine that they can join, or they find one of the millions of servers on the internet and join that with others

2) Can they play splitscreen on a PC without having to use some hacky type thing?

Definitely need a hacky thing - it is one game at a time per PC normally. Don't know if it is even possible

3) What exactly is the objective of minecraft, I don't get it at all

Think of it as Lego on steroids. They can either go into creative mode and have free range to build anything, or face a challenge to build up things from basic blocks they have to find and dig for.

On line this where minecraft is at. They have artistic contests where they have to build the best looking thing from a theme then judge each other,
or anther one where they steal sheep and shoot each other with bows - winner being the one with the most sheep in there pen at the end of a time limit.

And thousands of other sorts of games and contests and just building. Just youtube for some videos - I know my kids spend hours watching minecraft videos.

I believe minecraft is having a price rise soon if you are planning on buying a second licence. Something about lining up exchange rate?

I had no idea minecraft is not doing mutliplayer on windows 10. Was about to upgrade my machines - My kids will kill me if minecraft won't go.
EDIT: Quick research shows me I will live - normal minecraft runs fine on windows 10 - another different version  called Windows 10 minecraft is not so happy at the moment - but that's not what my kids play so I don't care :)

Thanks Guys

I'll digest this and probably be back with a few more questions

As a y5/6 teacher all I can say is about 40-60% of my class play this and rave about it every year for the last 3-4 years, but as a gamer myself I still don't 'get' it or see any point to the game at all... Maybe I just like objectives and a purpose/way to win?

So YMMV but highly recommended by kids aged 8-11 👍

I play it occasionally to "zone out" :) I like open world games where youre free to explore and do what you want (GTA is great for this too), I just tend to build up a decent home and try to survive rather than actually get to the Dragon etc.

Oh, another reason I play, is that it dosent require a $500 CPU + $800 video card to run :D
