I'm wanting to upgrade my PS3's hard drive and was wondering if, in doing so i will void my warranty and/or my extended warranty?? also does anyone know a website that lists the exact codecs and media types PS3's can play with the latest firmware? cheers

I would say yes it will void the warranty but best to check with sony they are the only ones that can really answer this question.

1) Will replacing hard drive void my warranty? No absolutely not. Sony positively encourages it (as they do installing linux). Go to your on-line help and search for it. There are also some very good guides on-line like here http://kotaku.com/gaming/howto/upgrade-your-ps3-hard-drive-326750.php

2) What codecs etc. are supported? Sorry, can't answer that I don't know.

Now that IS a neat feature!  I wish my 360 would let me do something like that.  I'm already chewing through its HDD with Xbox Original downloads from the marketplace.  I wish there was a way I could back them up, or move them off to another disk somewhere else while I'm not playing them to free up space.

nah the only thing i was concerned about was voiding the warranty but it turns out it doesn't matter and even if it does i could quite easily keep the original hard drive and if a claim on the warranty is needed i could chuck it back in the console.

its so easy anyway, its just a simple 2.5inch laptop hard drive. if anyone needed to know you can put anything up to a 250GB hard drive in.

as for the guy who wants to upgrade his 360, you can, however i think you need to buy ones that are recommended by microsoft. they are just standard 2.5inch SATA hard drives in the 360s too though so you may wana check it out. i think the 360s only take up to 160GBs though Tongue out i love it how anyone who bought the HD DVD add on for 360s have technically bought the equivalent of a Betamax drive as HDDVD is now no more.

Thinking about upgrading my PS3 Hard drive myself.. but im not going to put in a new 2.5inc Drive..
Im hoping to run a Sata cable out of the PS3 into a External eSata Case with a fast 3.5inc Drive..
Thinkn about running a 10,000 rpm Raptor or new 7,200 rpm 500gb drive..

Where'd you hear that maximum?  Is it just because that's the biggest 2.5" you can get (although aren't there bigger out now?)  It really won't recognise more than 250GB?

i'd do a bit of reseach before going ahead with that experiment. it's quite possible the ps3 won't be able to handle such high hard drive speeds as 10,000rpm.

as for where i heard that the max is 250gb, i heard it on a few websites including yahoo answers however it is quite possible people just say 250gb coz up until recently thats been the biggest 2.5inch drive on the market. you can now get 320gb 2.5inch drives.

I wouldn't go that far - my Xbox 360 HD DVD drive can still read DVD and CD discs....so its essentially a pretty handy external USB DVD drive.  Try doing anything but watch Betamax videos on a Betamax Player and see how you get on...

haha yea it may have been a bit of an exaggeration but first off can't your xbox 360s built-in drive play cds and standard dvds? i mean really how much does it cost for an external usb drive these days anyway? how much were the HDDVD xbox drives originally?

Hi thanks for yr comment..

I cant see why the PS3 couldnt handle faster RPM.. by far the slowest part in the PS3 is the hard drive.. so faster HD should only make the overall PS3 speed faster.. 10,000 drives dont need any special drives or chips to run.. they are just standard hard drive running at 10K rpm not 7.2k rmp...

The max 250 is alittle worrying.. i couldnt find a clear answer on the net.. after 2 hours of searching..

From what i can tell.. the PS3 only can see FAT32 partitions..which is a shame..
Problem with FAT32 is that you can not have a single file larger than 4gb.. (nt 2 worried about that)
But the make size of a HD formated to FAT32 is 8TiB.. so that is more than enough right now..
As look at the PS3 hasnt been programed to not allow more then 250gb then all should be fine..
and i should beable to run a 500gb+ 3.5inch Desktop hard drive formated to FAT32 via Sata into the system..

I think i will go for the 10,000 RPM with the WesterDigital Raptor 150GB.. Basicaly im nt to worried about storage space..
Im just looking to get game insatllation times and load times down.. and yes  1-5secs is alot to me...
Time is money after all.. but i think i will fine that I get much faster results given that the PS3 comes with a slow 5,400rpm 2.5inc Laptop drive.. / ps maybe i should move this post to my own topic.. :/ i didnt mean to take over

Could you let us know when/if you do try and put a 3.5" drive in your ps3?
I wouldnt bet money on it but ive got 5gig left on my 60gigPS3 just filled up with game saves, demos and downloads so if its possible im pretty keen to do the same - just not with a raptor drive, they are insanely expensive as far as storage goes...

Add me on PSN if its easier, i think im halfbaked or halfbakednz

the guys talking about installing a 3.5inch drive into an external case and plugging it in via an IDE-USB connection. The PS3 only takes 2.5inch drives if you actually wana install it inside the console. i would simply recommend going out and buying a 250gb 2.5inch 7200rpm hard drive as that'll suit most peoples needs and is reasonably priced unlike the raptor drives. until i actually hear the raptor drive works and has made things faster i am gona go right ahead and declare myself a skeptic.

Yes ok halfbaked ill get back to you when i have completed the install..

Im thinkn about doing a full review and doing some tests along to way..
Mostly looking at install times for games and cut sense load times ect..

As to dnb4life reply..

Not sure if you were talking about me.. but.. this is what im plan to do..

Buy an external case with eSATA out..

Install a (Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA2 - 72000.11rpm 32mb Cache drive... Or a Western Digital Raptor 150GB 10,000rpm SATA drive ) into the external case.

Then remove the 2.5 Laptop HD from the PS3

Buy a Internal SATA External Port Bracket

Remove one port and cut face away on the plug..

Then plug one end into the PS3 (where the 2.5 HD used to connect)
And the end of the SATA cable into the external case.

I got this idea from youtube ( Click Here )

Finaly -- If all when well after this.. and i was happy with the results
I would then create/buy a new black cover for the Hard Drive bay on the PS3 and make a hole suitable so i can
mod the PS3 to have an eSata port. Thus making it easyer/safter to plugin / remove any SATA external case.

Anyways this is what i plan to do... no USB involved.. the 3.5inc HD becomes yr Boot drive..

I would also like to add some of my other throughts on using a external eSATA HD as yr boot drive for the PS3..

Advanages of doing the above..

#1 - Possible Speed increase for games/installing/ect...
#2 - Less draw on PS3 PSU (this is because external case will supply power to HD)
#3 - Tipicaly Desktop 3.5 Hard drives are Cheaper/Faster/Larger Bytes than Laptop HD's
#4 - Hard Drive is external to the PS3 thus making the PS3 run cooler
#5 - Would be possible to use RAID 0 with supporting external cases (possible speed increase)
#6 - No need to tough PS3 if Hard Drive needed to be swapped
#7 - Something to brag about to your mates (or get laughed @)
#8 - External case and be used as paper weight or to press cloths

Disadvantages of doing the above..

#1 - increased power consumption
#2 - increased Hard Drive errors/damage (risk of being knocked when active)
#3 - Have to remeber to turn on external case because PS3 (or you will have error)
#4 - Have to remeber to turn off external case when finished with PS3 or it will keep HD powered up&spinning)
#5 - Need for yet another power plug (external case needs power) - And no the new (power over SATA will not work for PS3)
#6 - Even more cables around your feet
#7 - Risk of damage to PS3 when plugging in SATA cable (yet this is a small risk)
#8 - Takes up more room.. because its external
#9 - Another thing to carry around if your like to take your PS3 for walks (I sometimes Do)
