Hey all,

I bought a PS3 while overseas recently since it was a lot cheaper than here but it was a Japanese one. I knew the voltage was different and would need a step down transformer but I have heard that I might not need to get one. I've looked around on the net and it sounds like the older versions were 110-240V capable but with the 40GB ones it's a bit unclear whether or not it is.

I was just wondering if there was anyone here that could confirm whether I could save myself a bit of money and not need to get a big, chunky transformer or if I should just be safe and buy one (they're on trademe for around $100 for 500W and 800W).

Cheers.

The power supply wattage and rating should be displayed on the unit itself. Check near the power plug as it should say if it can take what voltage. AFAIK all PS3 are produced in multi-voltage PSU. If this is so, then you don't need a step-down transformer.

But if Sony is looking to save cost, it won't surprise me if they have done something to cut cost and limit to the local market.

p/s: you do know that you will not be able to play NZ Blu-ray and DVD titles, and even some games will not have all the features compare to the local titles.

OK, I found this forum thread http://www.avforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-633694.html (can I post this here?) and I seem pretty convinced so tomorrow I'm going into Dick Smith to get a plug and I'll post an update tomorrow night.

The local consoles are only 220 - 240v. If you import from Japan, you'll get a 110 - 240v PSU. No idea about America sorry.
