My friend has just got an XFX nForce 780i mobo and he has two Gigabyte 8800 GTS 512mb graphics cards.  So we were thinking he'd have a pretty awesome rig once its all together and running.  But SLi just isnt deliver the performance it should... infact it makes games run worse.

We've tried everything to get SLi working properly and had no luck.  We've tried both xp and vista (both 32 and 64 bit versions), we've tried updating every driver we can think of, we've tried SLi bridge round one way and around the other way, we've tried everything in the nVidia control panel, we've tried yelling at it, we're tried the cards in the opposite order, we've even tried readig the manual!!!!!

When we first booted the machine up after putting in the 2 graphics card with the sli bridge on, we got the usual message saying this is an sli compatible yadda yadda yadda so naturally we said yes to all that, but still got poor results, tried changing every setting in the nvidia control panel (took forever) but still cant get any decent performance out of it.

Hes got an 800w power supply and a core 2 quad 6600 chip.  4gb (2X2gb) ddr2 ram running at 800mhz.

He gets a better 3dMark 2006 score using one card than he does with two!  We are getting power straight from the powersupply to the cards instead of going through the 12v hard disk connectors with the Y shaped adapted on them.

If anyone could shed some light on this for us we'd be most grateful.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place, no doubt it will get moved if I got it wrong.

Some games just dont run any better with SLI, a few run worse than single video. I noticed that when looking at reviews when I was considering upgrading to a SLI sytem.
Are the games you're trying, labelled as being SLI compatiable as such ?

I would've thought 3dMark 2006 would be able to handle SLI

Hrm.. One thing you can try is to determine if the second card is doing anywork at all. Use a program that monitors the core temperatures of the video cards and leave it running. Start a game for a while, and take a look at the temperatures, if your second card temperature remains pretty much close to idle then its not kicking in at all. Have you tried switching the cards around? Also test each card invididually make sure both cards are working.

Ok first of all have you actually enabled SLI in the Nvidia control panel? When you first put the bridge on and boot up there is a messege that tells you that it is SLI ready BUT you have to manually turn SLI on from the control panel and also make sure.... and this is a big one.... make sure you have the latest up-to-date drivers avaliable, if it came with a disk throw that away as it is pretty much useless. Get your drivers and control panels etc straight from Gigabyte and Nvidia Also make sure the XFX MB's Bios are up-to-date

Nvidia also has a great system monitor that will be able to tell you if its picking up the 2nd card.
if its all working the way it should and nothings been overclocked then im guessing the 3Dmark06 score should be somewhere around 12000

Hope some of this helps and if not then PM me or something and i will try help you

Hi there, i had this problem a little while a go and I find some usefull tools that helpme sort that out,

Excellent tools:

Nhancer= have a sli graph that will show while playing games to see if both cards are working and if the load is distributed evenly, you can manually help the cards distribute the load to enhance performance. it has three different settings highperformance, performance, quality imange and high quality.
Nvidia MonitorView = will show you the two cards running and the temperatures for each card.
Fraps= you can monitor the framerates realtime while playing the games, take screenshots and video.

When i'm playing Crysis, FarCry and Counter Strike Source this tools help me monitor the performance and heat levels so i can adjust my cooling to the demands. and finally the most important of all is the drivers i actually use XtremeG drivers as they performe better for me, this are nvidia drivers but have been twikened for better performance in gaming. and i nearly forget the tool GPU-Z is a nice tool to see the spects of your card and also to see if SLI is enabled.

Good luck,
