Hi I have a Z170 mobo that supports 3200MHz RAM, bought Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 (dual channel).

But to my horror it runs at 2133MHz.

So reading up says actually it's only 2133 at JEDEC @ 1.20V and one needs to overclock using XMP and usually get more than 2133 but never 3200MHz @1.35V as advertised.

What should I aim for? It's running like 1 third below what I thought I was getting.

Thanks

Activate the XMP profile.

it is a strange concept really, ram is often sold with its headlined rates as actually 'overclocked'.

Can't be that easy? I have to enter parameters and the voltage manually? Or will it detect everything?

Also what do the 4 numbers of the timing mean? say 15 15 15 15 is a lot or a bit better than 18 18 18 18?

Unless things have changed, AMD based chipsets you have to manually enter (Last AMD system i had was my 1090T)

Intel based chipsets you simply hit XMP and your away laughing.

Timings, I honestly don't notice the difference too much. Others with absolutely rave about having X timings over Y however.

Really depends on your workload.

had a similar experience yesterday, bought DDR3 1866MHz but bios it was coming up at 1633.  and had to "overclock" it (well change a setting).

Wow yes one click it was! Thank you. Don't know why googling gave me all sorts of other steps.

as i said, atleast back in the day.. AMD didn't autoload XMP profiles, you had to manually enter that in - It was a PITA not even kidding.
