My parents want my iMac so I've sidegraded to a macbook and have decided to build a PC so I can still play games. Was playing around with the PC builder on ascent.co.nz and came up with the following:

  • BenQ DW1680 DVD Writer
  • Corsair XMS2 2x1GB DDR2800 CL4 RAM
  • Antec Sonata III Case including 500W power supply
  • Gigabyte GA EP35C DS3R motherboard (1600FSB, 4xDDR2, 2xDDR3, 1 PCIe-16)
  • Intel Core 2 Due E6750 2.66, 1333FSB
  • XFX 8800GT, 512, XXX Edition with Zalman Fan
  • Samsung 226BW 22" Monitor
  • Seagate SV35 320GB 7200rpm SATA HD

Which comes out at about $2,200, which is just under my budget (but doesn't include keyboard or mouse). Any suggestions? I'm interested in getting the most for my money, thus the 2.66 processor (too much of a jump in price to get 3).

The CPU you can do better for the price. The new 45nm Core 2 Duo's are labeled E8X00 and are cheaper than their E6X50 equivilents. They also have an extra 2mb L2 cache over them, run cooler, consume less power and are excellent overclockers.

I've got the E8400 which is a 3.0Ghz, and people have got them to 4.0Ghz stable on air.

I agree with Adaml , go for the 8x00 series of CPU - Im getting an 8200 which is same clock speed as the 6750 but with extra cache for about $15 more than the 6750.

Apart from that, should be a nice system.
