So in preparation for the upgrade to an Xbox One S, from my Xbox One, I moved all my games to the external hard disk then put my Xbox One in the pile to be sold. Connected the new Xbox to find

1) The Kinect doesn't fit and I need a *$70* adapter to make it work. WTF are they thinking!?

2) I have 600GB of games, and no, it can't "find" them on the Xbox External HDD, it needs to redownload them again!? WTF, it's 2017.

So far, hardly impressed.

1. There was a promo for first few months when you upgraded to Xbox One S, you received the adapter for free via redemption. Mine came within couple of days from Australia via UPS. It's quite a kit.

2. I also copied close to 500GB worth of games to external hard drive, plugged into new Xbox One S and it picked them up all ok. What you may find is that it might be saying that it's re-downloading them but it might be a quick 1 or 2 minute re-download of license files etc and game will be ready.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I believe microsoft were supplying free adaptors for customers who wanted one.

Maybe the limited time is over?

Regarding the external drive-- my understanding is with the ps4 the drives are encrypted to a specific machine. Maybe the same happens for the xbox?

How do you find the xbox one s noise levels? I was thinkng about getting one as a media player as my ps4 is like a jet engine even when just playing videos via plex/netflix.

Xbox One was quiet and the Xbox One S is quiet as well. The games on internal drive or external hard drives are not locked down to a specific console. You can transfer them as much as you want to another external hard drive and go plug it into your friends console and copy it to their internal drive to save them download 40GB once they have bought the game digitally.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Then why in the name of heck is it now downloading these games again on my new console!?

Surely, that should not be the case?

Well, I am here red faced to make an admission of guilt. Unfortunately, it would seem that despite my best efforts not do to this, I have somehow mixed two very similar USB Drives up, and plugged what I thought was the Xbox HDD into the Xbox, when in fact it was related to something else. Once I realized my mistake, plugged in the right hard disk, and my games populated and were ready to play within seconds.

Congrats to MS for creating a pretty seamless upgrade experience (less the requirement for a $60 adapter).

This will be a speed bump to me upgrading to a Xbox One S. The smaller size and integrated PSU were the main drawcards, but if I can't use my existing accessories without added cost, I may end up not bothering.

Glad you got your games sorted in the end, I am sure you are not the first to have done this and not the last. I remember years ago when I was working for a small IT company that an important customer came in to have all of his data migrated onto his brand new Apple laptop. I was told that the transfer needed to be done with care and go without any issues for this very important customer.

My boss wanted to start the transfer himself and without checking erased the HDD on the customers old laptop and not the new laptop.... I could do noting but sit there and laugh because he then has to explain to the important customer that he was an idiot haha.

It has not arrived yet but I decided to try my luck and ask MS if they would make an exception to the expired policy of providing adapters free of charge and they have agreed to do this. Was nice of them to do it, and so that is a big tick in the box for MS gaming division!

Now if only I could find a way to change email and gamer tag I would be a happy man

@freitas it seems MS have done nothing wrong here - quite the opposite - and this is a clear case of user error. Perhaps change the subject to something more balanced?

I use mine to occupy space in the box of random cables that I will probably never use but should probably keep anyway.
