I recently bought an Xbox One S (principally as a BluRay player) and have been trying to come to grips with the brave new world.  I own an Xbox 360 that has been gathering dust for the past couple of years as parenthood beckoned, and never really delved into it too deeply - I mostly used it for Rocksmith and some single-player gaming (Tomb Raider, Need for Speed).

The XB1S came with a 14 day trial of XB Live Gold and so I figured I would redeem it and see what games were available in the Games for Gold section.  On Xbox.com I see two XB1 titles and an XB360 title (Lego Star Wars) which is XB1 compatible.  However, it doesn't look like I can download the XB360 title to my XB1 (even though it says its compatible).  How do I get my hands on it?  Please don't tell me that I have to plug my XB360 back in and log in just to redeem the XB360 free game, and then copy it across to my XB1...

Also, I see MS are taking 20% of XB Live Gold subscriptions.  How frequent are these kind of deals?  I've seen others mention nzgameshop.com but it's not offering any discounts at the moment.  Are we in Briscoes territory here or should I grab the 20% discount while its going?

Xbox Live gold discounts via official Microsoft channels in NZ are not often. I just buy mine from an overseas supplied like Amazon or cdkeys.com when they run a deal as Xbox Live gold subscription is not region locked.

To use Games for Gold, you need a valid Xbox Live Gold subscription. I am not sure if the 14 day trial counts towards the free games. Maybe that's the problem. You might only be able to use the free 14 day trial to play games online that you already own. You might need to buy the subscription to download the free games.

Thanks.  How does the 20% discount stack up against overseas places like Amazon etc?

I've had no problems downloading XB1 and XB360 Games with Gold to my Xbox One S.  I'm on a full membership though.

Pretty good actually. Amazon is currently US$59 for 12 months. Microsoft NZ is NZ$69 for 12 months.

I did see a deal 3 days ago though on /r/xboxone for 15 months subscription for US$45. Not sure if still valid or not.

Thanks for that.  Will go with the MS discount and hopefully that will enable the download for the XB360 titles too

Still no luck.  Have activated 12-month Gold subscription but Xbox.com still won't let me redeem it as a free game.  The only link I get is "Download to 360" but if I click that it takes me to a billing page and tries to charge me $39.95 for it.  The other games (XB1) can be redeemed on the same site, no problems.

Scouring the website revealed that they don't have a way for XB360 titles to be downloaded direct to XB1, but that they can be redeemed via XBox.com (which is where I'm trying to do this) or by downloading to the XB360.

"How do I download the backward-compatible Games with Gold titles to play on Xbox One?

You can either download the Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles on an Xbox 360 console or in a browser at Games with Gold. The games will automatically show up on Xbox One in the "Ready to Install" section of My games & apps. We are working on a way for users to download the games on Xbox One directly, but at this moment you'll need to do it on Xbox.com or have previously redeemed/downloaded the title on Xbox 360. See Moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One."

If I have to I'll plug my XB360 back in tonight to try and redeem it before the offer ends (Wednesday), but I really don't understand why I can't do this on XBox.com, especially when they say it is possible.

Try a different browser? It might show the price as $39.99 or whatever but when you sign in with your Microsoft Account and get to the final 'Confirm' pop up page, it will show the amount as Free.

Thanks.  I just tried it in IE, and sure enough when the billing page came up it now showed "Free".  Previously it said $39.95.  Will check on XB1 when I get home tonight, hopefully it's all gone through ok.
