I'm looking at getting a Switch (I have a birthday coming; allegedly I am "hard to buy for" so have to/get to pick what I want for myself).

I like the form factor, have been an on-and-off fan of the Nintendo exclusives, and think the Labo stuff looks really cool. I haven't really had time to play games for years but the kids are getting older and I'm looking forward to be able to play with them. So seems like a solid option.

But anything I should know prior to buying/things I need for day one? I've seen from the bigger thread from around the launch date that dead pixels and screen scratching on the unit are possible concerns. Still an issue?

I'll end up with additional controllers eventually, but any must have/highly recommended accessories to prioritise?

Similarly games, I've got a couple of (obvious) must haves on my list, but any recommendations welcome. I think I've figured out that there's no region locking (awesome. Finally). So I'd buy local but consider buying games with better prices/exclusive offers internationally.

The warehouse and jbhifi seems to have them for just under $500. Likely to be sharper prices than that any time soon?

I got the Switch right on launch as my first Nintendo home console. I had a Gameboy micro before that but never owned any first party Nintendo games for it, so I was coming in basically fresh to Nintendo.

I would straight away get a glass screen protector, I'd be way more worried about docking/undocking if I hadn't put one on. Two pairs of joycons is great, only swap them when charging otherwise you'll be taking them on and off every time you dick and undocked.

As for games, I've not really been able to purchase anywhere near as many as I'd like. Early on I played a lot of Zelda and shovel knight, I was blown away by Zelda and it's the first in the franchise I'd ever sunk much time into.

Mario kart was great for a while, never found the online that much fun but it's good with other people in local multiplayer. Surprisingly four people in table top mode is still perfectly playable.

Being able basically hit the power button to snooze the console then pick up again without load times is absolutely amazing - greatly reduces the barrier to play when you only have short bursts of time or have to be able to be interrupted suddenly.

I've only got Mario kart and Mario odyssey as physical games, and to be honest switching cartridges seems like too much hassle sometimes so unless you're finding them very cheap digital is the go.

I thought I'd be able to play more out of the house, but I'd need a much longer commute that didn't have a transfer for getting the console out and putting away again worthwhile - it's portable but not that portable. That and I find I get motion sick playing in the car, much more so than reading or using my phone.

Thanks for reading my boring thoughts on the switch. Definitely get one though, it's good as.

I personally cannot use the device without a offset analogue controller. The standard switch controllers are disgusting to use.
720P is pretty far behind the ball. Get a One X.

I have had a switch for 6 months now:

Mario Odyssey was a blast

Zelda I have sunk a LOT of hours into and is great fun

Mario Kart is fun

Overcooked is fun local multiplayer

Just Dance is fun

A lot of random indies etc

Playing on it in handheld mode while someone else watches TV is great.

I don't notice the resolution - it hasn't been a big deal. I haven't played the doom port or other big console games that have been ported.

If you want to play the latest releases, shooters, gta, halo's or god of war - get a ps4/xbox one. If you want the best console graphics, get a ps4/xbox one.

If you want to play Nintendo exclusives and want a reasonably portable console - get a Switch.

As far as Day 1 - I bought a case and screen cover.

I never notice the low resolution, but haven't been playing many ports, except Skyrim in handheld and it looks fine to me. Might not be so great if your tv is bigger but up to 40in things look great on the Switch's own screen.

I got it for portability and short play sessions. If I'd got an xbox or PS I would end up playing much less so I'm happy to sacrifice power for play time.

I'm looking at getting a Switch but that offset right controller bothers me. It looks like it would sit awkardly in my hand, with the thumb stick being too low down. How do other people find it?

I would probably want to get the Pro controller to use instead, but can the Pro controller be used with all games? That was a problem I had when I bought the Classic Pro controller for my Wii, I found that very few games actually supported it.

You get used to the controllers.

The Switch is definitely a lot more fun. Even managed to get SWMBO into Mario kart. Its definitely more for the social aspect than say something like PS4 or XB. I also have a PS4, but the wifey would never want to learn Fifa.

I'm tellin ya they do not unless you buy the additional xbox styled controller.
See how the movement between analogue and buttons are vertical and not on a 45 like other controllers. makes it really hard to use and awkward. Maybe you just have spaghetti fingers?

I actually prefer to use the controllers free hand. That is, without the holder thing. feels more comfortable actually.

Going from keyboard + mouse primarily to owning a switch, the controller configuration is the only one I'm used to as it's been years since I had an Xbox 360. It's fine.

The freedom of a controller in each hand is pretty good too.

Not my birthday yet so haven't taken the plunge on a Switch but feel the need to have a grizzle on a somewhat related topic:

Most of my (exceedingly limited) gaming time recently has been on a 3DS and the SNES Classic. But just recently I've been playing South Park 2 (I haven't laughed so hard in *years* as when fighting Morgan Freeman) on PC with an Xbox 360 Controller. The fact that the A/B and X/Y buttons are transposed is absolutely doing my head in.

It's like that double lightswitch you know is wired back to front... so you always always end up turning on the wrong light, or the European vs Japanese wiper/indicator left and right thing. </grizzle>

Thought you were meaning on the horizontal, not the vertical plane

I have the pro controller, so only use the joycons when travelling anyway

Yeah that is what I was meaning, The joy con I cannot use to save myself. I never tried the pro controller with fortnite on the switch. But 720P on that screen for fortnite is almost unplayable.

So how does the online work for the Switch? I think I read that it was pay only? And if I buy games digitally, are they locked to my particular Switch or to my account (I think that was a problem with Wii digital games, in that they were locked to the console rather than the account that bought them, so if your Wii died you lost all your digital games).
