After a six year break from gaming thanks to generally being too knackered (small children/young family) I'm getting back on the horse with an Xbox One X for Christmas. sealed

I'm looking at filling in some of the gaps from the past few years with second hand games and see that some people on Trade Me are selling digital download codes rather than physical discs.

How does that work in practice?

Are you allowed to re-sell a digital copy if it's been uninstalled or will the download code be permanently locked to particular account once it has been activated for the first time?

Maybe they bought something that comes with a code that is unused. Once it's used it cannot be reused.

Check their feedback

locked to that account.  people usually sell codes they get in console packages for games they dont want to already have.

Yeh, there was one guy on trademe i kept reporting for selling accounts with digital games attached to it. Apart from the fact its easy for them to revoke the games after the sale has gone through, its against both MS Terms of service and trademe's im pretty sure to, so i would avoid. If its the actual peice of paper, with a code printed on it, that hasn't been redeemed, then once you redeem that it is tied to your account. its possible too, that they can gift games to them selves with stolen, and sell the codes that that way, MS normally picks up on those, and bans the accounts that have redeemed them. avoid sites like G2a too, where the pricing is too often good to be true. Try you local cash converters or similar too, they often have cheap games.

simple logic.

I always use kinguin and G2A.  people buy consoles, get digital codes for games they dont want, they sell them.  G2A/Kinguin have buyer protection.  trademe have feedback, I wouldnt buy from someone with little feedback, but i would/have bought xbox codes before.

Thanks guys.

Kind of what I thought, codes only okay if verified as unused.

I'm a bit old school, to be honest.

I prefer having a physical disc. The problem these days is that even with a disc it's probably going to what to download a tonne of patches before you can play the damn thing anyway.

no they dont charge you every month.   there may be an account or plan or option for this.  but ive bought dozens of stuff of them (steam, xbox) and never been charged every month, only the charges per sale.

That's very good to know thanks. Yes there is a box to untick when you buy, but I keep reading about people getting charged. Now I know if I untick that box it should be ok.

There are benefits to digital only. Convenience is one, as all games physical/digital get installed to the hard drive anyway you don't need to swap out discs to play different games. You can also take it wherever you log in with your account and in cases gameshare with other accounts on a different machine at the same time (ie. you play on your account on any machine at any time, but share the game with someone else on their machine and they can play at the same time).

Discs these days only provide resell opportunity. Once the game is installed they serve as nothing more than being a key to unlock your game to play.

Also grey (verging on black) marketplaces like G2A are very much a risky choice. Morally it's not a good decision to get a key from there as there are far too many events of stolen or credit fraud keys being sold for pure profit by the seller. There are far better third-party vendors who still provide a decent discount incentive on games than resort to the likes of g2a.

+1 for digital.

I've gone 100% digital for the this generation of console. The convenience of not having to swap discs and always having something ready to go no matter what mood you're in just can't be overlooked. If you're the type of gamer who knock's out a single player campaign in a week and plays the multiplayer for a few weeks before flipping the disc for some resale then it's a different story. I'm a casual gamer who may not even turn on the console on for weeks at a time and I like to jump in and out of games as the mood fits so digital suits me better.

Funny to see the attitude towards digital copies given the absolute sh*t storm Microsoft's original plans for online verification/no second hand sales caused when Xbox One was first announced.

I'm sure that if the physical copy is significantly cheaper that I'll be able to put up with the inconvenience of shoving a disc into the front of the machine.

We'll see if my attitude changes over time given that these new fangled methods didn't exist back in the Xbox 360 days except for Geometry Wars and the like.

They made exceptions to those plans pretty quickly. Now with game/family sharing you can effectively share one license of a game with two people.

Digital has been around for a long time now. PC gamers have been used to it for almost a decade due to Steam/Bnet/Origin/Uplay. Both MS and Sony wanted to do something similar to get revenue locked into the system and it's working to an extent.

It really does depend on the person though. As mentioned a person who is low on cash and plays regularly will bash out a physical game in a week and then sell it for near retail and move on to the next game, unless it's a popular multiplayer title. People who don't mind the pricetag and keeping the game will more likely go digital to retain the license and play whenever they want.

with specific regards to xbox one games, if you buy USA games from g2a will it activate on my account? my account has a US address but i can play games i bought in NZ. So I'm a bit confused about regions and xbox one.
