So I bought 2 codes for PS Plus Membership on a prime day special.

Went to redeem them onsite at playstation.com and it says not valid in this region.

I have done this before, is this new tomfoolery? Is there a way around it, I don't want to burn $80 USD

I always thought the codes were region specific. Do you have US account as well as a NZ region account (Europe possibly?)?

They are region-specific, if you bought from Amazon.com, you'll need to redeem against a US-based account (and UK based if you bought from Amazon.co.uk).

They've always been that way (at least since the PS4 was released). Xbox is region-free (mostly, I believe a few regions such as Brazil/India may be locked down).

I presume I can't temporarily change region on an account, claim and switch back?

If not, then that sucks, I'm now out $80USD.

I guess I could try listing on ebay

No you can't, but this is one reason many people have a separate US-based account. If you redeem PS+ on your US account, you can still use it to play online (and play the free PS Plus games) with your normal NZ account.

It's also worth having one for US-based PS Store sales, where prices are often much better than NZ.

No you cant switch regions.

What people do is vpn to US and make a US account and then redeem/buy games there and login as primary to the console to share all the benefits to other logged in accounts.

Downside is that ownership of games goodies etc is on the US account and not your NZ one, and that psn plus won’t stack. You’ll need to wait for ps plus to expire before you activate on your new account.

Well, that sucks. Off to ebay for me, unless anyone here wants them?

This is what I did a fe years ago to get cheaper PS games on the US PS store when it had sales and when our $ was better.
Create another email account to use solely with the US ps4 account. Use this account to create a US playstation account with a random US address on it.
Add this ps account as a different account to your PlayStation 4.
Add the ps plus membership to this account.

This had the added bonus of being able to purchase US games through a convoluted path using ps store vouchers via amazon.com.
The games etc purchased on the us account are able to be used by any user on the PS4, however any DLC for US games will need to be purchased via the US.

.

At least this all worked a few years back when I did it.
